Do you have a late GTA pre-plumbed for aircon and would like it retro fitted?

Unfortunately Barry at Reader Air Conditioning (the people who designed the original system) no longer has any evaporators left and has since thrown all of the moulds away. Also someone purporting to be a member of the GTA Owners Club has taken all the blower motors and these are now irreplaceable. So please don't phone him and ask for a kit or spares as there are none available.

HOWEVER

We have spoken at length and if I can get enough interest he is prepared to re-design and re-manufacture a complete new improved kit/system for the GTA. Remember this is the man who designed the original system and he is confident that he can improve on this.

The cost would be around £1000 per car + a share of the development costs which could be another £200-£300 per car. If you are interested please let me know ASAP. I will need a deposit from everyone before they will start.

At present they can start work immediately, but if we leave it until after May they cannot start again until next winter. So if you are interested let me know ASAP.

Surely worth it just to get rid of that nasty flimsy chocolate box plastic cover in the luggage compartment!!

Good grief.... do you know how long it has taken me to get hold of an original fan unit/evaporator?!!!

Would be interested, but still sounds like a lot of cash...

need to firm up abit on the price - a lot of cash but the planet temperature will have risen by about 3 degrees by the time he has designed the system so it might be worth the investment

Difficult to get an exact figure on the price without firm numbers as the development cost will need to be split between the purchasers, so have to allow £1000 at present.

It would cost a fortune from Renault with all new parts, just the tensioner wheel for the compressor is £120+VAT!!

The compressor and bracket are no problem. The compressors are of a common type and available at a reasonable price. The bracket for the compressor could be taken from one of your reasonably numerous R25 Turbos or V6s. I have one already fortunately.

The condenser should not be very hard, mine even has the wiring for a second radiator fan, but I do admit the evaporator is a fair bit tougher. Is there any room in the original ventilation unit to fit an evaporator?

On earlier cars without the pipework life is harder and more expensive.

I admit though to buy a kit with all of the brackets, hoses and components sorted is attractive.

Yes I have the compresser and bracket too, only the condenser I was thinking about trying to do differently. Some porsches have little condensers in the front wing ahead of the wheel and I have been trying to find a pair of small ones for this... off a smart car?!
I have never liked the condenser screening the front of the radiator.
An updated system would be good tho, I never remember the standard system being too effective in my old turbo GTA

Stephen would it be any easier for them if they had an original evaporator to take moulds of?

Yes it would help. They have asked for an original evaporator & compressor mounting bracket along with some other parts.

There is more involved than just the compressor, condensor and evaporator though. Have a look at the parts fiche. This is just the one for the plumbing and you don't get all of this even on a late car.

Some of those rear pipes are over £100 each

It is probably easiest for me to drop my evaporator and stuff into them as I live very close.
I'll do it in ten days or so, when I'm back from holiday.

That would be great, but please don't drop it in yet. They're not prepared to even look at anything until I come up with a hefty deposit first

I'll also need to check whether it will come back in one piece. I assume you still want it working afterwards!!

Well I now have the stuff off the car... the fan unit, the evaporator, the plastic shroud crap, the recirculate vent under the dash and the compresser, oh and a load of wiring!
Trying to find a small condenser, like the ones that Porsche 996 have in the front of the wing... never liked it across the radiator.
I'll take the lot to Woking in due course, thats if my car ever gets finished!
