Removing Instrument Cluster

Hi folks

Both the bulbs that illuminate the speedo and tach are both out on my 1989 GTA Atmo. I have looked all over the dash to see where the screws are to remove the cluster but cant seem to find them.

I take it I just need to remove the front of the cluster and not the whole instrument panel?

Has anyone done this job before? How hard is it?

In order to re-new the bulbs the whole panel has to be removed.

First remove steering wheel, then air vents left and right, then remove the undertray under the steering wheel.
You can then remove the complete front of the dashboard by removing the 4 screws underneath.
Once this is off, you'll be able to remove the instrument pod complete in order to get at the bulbs.

I done this a few years back and it was a pain in the a*se just to replace a bulb. I replaced all the dash illimination bulbs whilst it was apart!!!

I do this on a regular basis, not because of bulbs blowing but due to having a dodgy connector that feeds the speedo.

My personal best time to dismantle is just over 4 mins

Will give it a go later. Amazing the amount of things that have to be removed just to change a bulb!

Wait till it needs a clutch

Well it seems the previous owner didnt like screws so they left out all of the ones under the dash....

I didnt even need to remove the steering wheel in the end, it did take a bit of brute force and ignorance but the whole thing came off pretty easily.

Anything electrical I removed and sprayed with electric contact cleaner and used a small screwdriver to clean any of the metal contacts.

Speedo works much better and I can now see my gauges at night!
