Aren't A610s fantastic

My work colleague, who has fallen in love with mine, has an email from the seller saying that he has had it inspected and there is no evidence of accident damage other than a front wing had been replaced. The repair costs for these cars can be so high that even minor damage could result in cat C.

He isn't put off by this as there are only 40 odd cars left so when is another one going to come up that will probably have some other issues.

If this was a Mondeo or a 350Z then there would be little point considering it but A610's are outstanding cars and their rarity means this one has to be one to think about.

The seller told me the same but it does'nt add up, how much was this A610 worth in 2001 and how much would a wing and paint be? Think i would have to speak to the owner who made the claim for peace of mind.

Knowing the prices that Renault charge for parts. it would be quite easy to CAT C- especially with specialist painting being needed. A damaged left wing would also mean battery tray, battery door etc.
Getting peace of mind is really a 4 wheel angle check and they aren't that expensive? As its under the reserve there might be a deal to be done around that?
There do seem to be different stories about removing cat c or D designations.
According to Autolign's website they can remove the car from the HPI "Condition alert" list, but it will still show up as a former write off- I guess at Swansea.

Yours for 195 or 230 depending on the car. Guess the Alps will qualify for the higher figure.

Have to disagree, the details are a wing and paint(so i've been told, think there must be more) remember in 2001 not now, that would be a soft write off, the car would have been valued at £11K-£15K back then surely?? wing and paint £2K tops

What matters is how good is the car now. The repair has clearly stood the test of time. He says there is no uneven tyre wear, doesn't pull to one side.

I would imagine that in reality there would have been a little more damage but could still have been easy to put right. Add the time that the insurer would have had to pay for a hire car etc etc and cat C status is easy to attain.

Also consider the salvage value would have been high (is still high).

Its a guessing game until someone in the know has a look at it, still say there has to be more to it than a wing(and a hire car) good luck to who ever gets it.

I guess the cat C status has put people off.

There is'nt a huge market for these cars anyway then when you add no history and a Cat C the interest in it is down to zero, could be a bargain at that price, if it had'nt sold i planned a trip to view it.

I bought (& sold) a CAT C 610 from DGs brother.

The damage was fairly light and as it had been stored for years the corrosion and mileage was better than many undamaged cars.

As said previously damage can be really minor to write off a GTA or A610. I have bought a CAT C GTA with virtually no visible damage and it was driven it home from the salavage yard.

With the A610 it can be an unavailable part that can cause the write off, for example bonnets were simply unavailable for a while.

I've had some good (or is it bad) news that I'm likely to be asked to consider a posting in Shanghai for 12 months. If this goes ahead, I'm going to give him mine to look after as there is nothing worse for these cars than standing unused.

Isn't a huge market! With about 40 cars left, if only 1 in a million wanted one in the UK, there still wouldn't be enough to go around. I think you older owners are just undervaluing what's familiar to you. The cars have sold for little in the past which is then used as a guage for what the next person will pay. The sad thing is that this cycle will drive the cars to extinction. At just over £6K, you don't need much to make these cars unviable to keep on the road.

Since buying mine, I've had a number of people amazed that the car was less than £10K as well as a note on my windscreen on Tesco's car park asking if it was for sale. That's in 1 week and it's still got Alvin's f@!£$%ng shark fin on it!

One of the other things I like is how cool and understated it is. It's great being able to say "I drive an old Renault" and actually have a 165mph exotic car.

They said that about my wooden chassis Marcos. I bought it at £5K, sold it 4 years later having done nothing more than services for £9.5 and the next owner sold it 3 months later for £11K. OK the Marcos was desirable for historic racing but there were more buyers than cars available.

I certainly haven't bought the blue A610 for investment potential though. If however I do 10K miles in it and sell it for scrap, it will still have cost me less than my neighbour has lost on his RX8 in the same time.
