Brake Overhaul

It's brake overhaul time, so I'm fitting new disc's, pads, lines, fluid and a new rear D/S calliper. Is there anything i should know? When i change the fluid do i need to change the clutch fluid at the same time? How?! What's the best order to bleed the whole system?

Clutch and brake hydraulics share the same reservoir and fluid so replacing the fluid affects both systems.

The bleed nipple for the clutch is near the bell housing on the right hand side and should also be done when the brakes are bled. As has been stated both clutch and brakes feed from the same reservoir, only the clutch takes its fluid higher up the side of it. Meaning that you will run out of clutch fluid before your brakes do.

Make sure that you examine the brake pipe running from the master cylinder to the pressure balance valve at the rear.

I was on the way for an MOT on Saturday and my brakes failed on the way there. Fortunately I still had some brake so I made it there, but I shudder to think if it happenned doing 100MPH +.

Unfortunately Renault decided to use some form rubber on the retaining straps that hold all the pipes in place running from the front to the back ie Fuel, vaccum, air-con etc. There are approx. 8 straps and you have guessed it, the foam holds water, and the water corroded the steel pipes, The pipes were corroded at each of the strap locations - OK where there are no straps!!!

I haven't changed the pipe yet, but have started and I can assure you that prevention is definitely better than changing it!!

Has anyone experienced the joys of changing the pipe, and do you have any helpful tips? I have managed to remove the pipe end from the master cylinder, but that was completely by feel. I am not looking forward to re-connecting it. The rear fitting at the pressure balance valve looks just as bad!!

Finally done! Finished on Saturday eve, now fitted with 8 groove Nitrac Disc's and Padgid Blue pads all round. The rears were shafted, one side: piston seized, so had to use piston winding tool and patience/brute force to sort. The other: some numpty had taken all the thread out of the head of the disc retaining screw so i had to drill it out took ages.

However, the difference in stopping power and feel is astonishing. I really can't recommend it enough, worth every penny.

I took her up to the Northumberland and N. York moors for a 3hour blast over the past few days, no fade no drama just total grin inducing fun!
