Wanted : Offside Rear Suspension Arm

Postby scottydog » Mon Mar 31, 2008 7:59 pm

Hi all - MOT failure today

"Offside Rear Suspension Arm corroded and seriously weakened"

Are these available from Renault (not had chance to 'phone them yet) - and do I need to be sitting down when I'm told the price?

Anyone have a good used one pls ?

I also need a steering rack gaiter (offside).

Cheers!

Simon.

Get it welded  I take it you mean the lower arm?

I had heard a rumour that renault were selling the lower arms for £150 each fully bushed! I enquired and was told it would be £700 each

I think the steering rack boots are still available cheaply, think they are the same as the 25 or Fuego?

I can do you a pair of new Renault arms including bushes for under £500. That's the price Renault want for the bushes alone for one side at the moment

Alternatively a pair of uprated tubular arms for £400. These will need bushes at £23.50 each. So £588 all in.

All items in stock and ready to collect.

Mine failed on a corroded lower suspension arm last year. Took it off and got it welded at a local body repair shop for just a few squid. :D

Spoke to the garage today. They tell me it's no longer allowable to have suspension parts welded for repairs and they can't give me a MOT pass if I get it welded elsewhere.

Can't say I've heard that before but they're a good garage I've been using for many years and they're usually pretty good.

Stephen - do you only sell the arms in pairs?

How was the arm constructed in the first place if not welded?

I can understand if it's a bodge job but a good (painted) repair is potentially going to be better than new, and look better if you do both. It's not like they're space age extruded aluminium after all.
I'm just here for the gasoline.

Time to go to another garage?? I have had both my rear arms welded on both my cars and the 2nd MOT station did query it but passed it no problem.

I re-bushed and painted them myself, got my mate to weld them for a beer. As long as the outer bit is OK the plate in the middle is welded into place from new anyway as Darren says.

My rear arms on the Red car were welded for £10 each and then passed at the same garage. They were done in situe as well so I didn't touch the bushes.

This is one of those "letter of the law vs. spirit of the law" things. You shoud fail your MOT if one of the suspension ams has fallen apart and been welded back together - imagine smacking a kerb and fracturing an arm, and having it re-welded... would you trust that? That's why the rule is there.

Steering components aren't allowed to be welded either.

However, what you're talking about is that thin plate which goes crusty really easily. You can have that welded, paint it up and it'll be as good as new and with a clear conscience (sp?) If they fail it on principle after that, then it's time to take it elsewhere. What's actually written on your failure sheet is picked from a list - they can no longer write in their own wording. You get all sorts of alaming comments which are simply all that's available to the tester. I've had "n/s/r brake efficiency seriously low" or something. The translation? "Needs new rear discs".

If the job is done well, dressed back afterwards and painted I would challenge any MOT station to know its been done. Its not as if many of them have seen an Alpine recently. I know mine is the only one my MOT station sees..

Sounds like Waxoyling lower suspension arms is on the cards for all club members this weekend..... :P
