Timing Marks

As you can't see the flywheel mark for # 1 tdc with the engine installed I've taken some pics and ref to the pulley .

There are two notches in the pulley ,the one closest to the keyway will line up dead center to a screwhole on the timing cover as here ..........





There's another totally foolproof way to find TDC but that's a secret

Lee, Does it drop into a slot (if so what size drill bit), or what? you have got me intregued.

Martin told me about this .8 mm diameter .You have to make sure it doesn't drop into the balancing hole .That is about 10/12 mm so you will have some slop if it does .The slot is a honeymoon fit though ,dead 8mm ,drill bit is 7.8 ,55 mm deep when seated .

Thanks for the info. I suspect there is a special tool for this. I have got the same pincipal on my two Marine Diesels, the tool screws into the hole and has a spring loaded pin (8mm) which drops into a hole in the flywheel as you rotate it slowly, at TDC. Very useful. Takes all the fun out of it though.

Yes, there is a tool with a threaded tophat and rod that sits in there for that exact reason.
