Jacking point crossmember

What's the score on replacing these ?Mine are shot and failed the MOT :evil:

Don't need to drill it :roll: Grinder and welder required ...........It's the outer 6" or so, main beam looks fine ....................

One of mine was knackered and had cracked where it joined the main sill. Worryingly the book says it's a case of cutting the fibreglass floor and then welding in a new section but I had mine repaired in situ. Far easier and cheaper.

Martin's guy next door - Nelu (Portugese you know!) did the work and it's stunning. He's done a ton of welding on the car - amazingly all with oxy-acetylene. No idea how as usually it's mig only on a fibreglass car (coz it's 'cold'), but he's done a damn good job.

Pics to follow soon but most worrying was just how much rot there was and how much welding took place. It's never ever been picked up on an MOT as a warning but so much is invisible unless you're stripping the car down!

I was a bit miffed they failed it on that but they dont know the structure of the car so ...............
I need to get it sorted ASAP .just moved so don't know anyone local .The guys at the MOT garage said no ,too specialised for them ,which is a good sign I suppose :lol:

It was the outer 6 inches on mine too but Nelu just made up a new section and welded it in place. Once it's painted you can't really even see the join.
I'm just here for the gasoline.

BTW that's as in "The unit next door to mine" - I'm in Unit 6, Nelliu is in Unit 1 :D - the two large units in our building.

I feel a bit better now looking at those pics :shock: :wink: Mine ,on the surface ,doesn't look really bad .....................

I need to replace both lower wishbones as well ,the last MOT weld fix has not lasted the course .

That's the worrying thing - mine on the surface didn't look bad at all. All the bad areas were hidden and only visible by dropping the subframe and suspension.

It's now all cleaned up and repainted etc but it's shocking how bad it can get, and on a fibreglass car it just doesn't notice. Dave G had the same issues on his red one but in different areas.

Stupid really that Alpine didn't galvanise the frames from new. The fact that people were going to keep them a long time wasn't exactly without precedent. A110s were 20+ yrs old when they were making the GTAs, they should have thought the same would apply to 310s, GTAs and 610s.

Thing is, none of the metal work was made by Alpine, it was all subbed out to Heuliez, the coachbuilders. Probably kept the costs down..

My car had completely rotten pillars, and the seat belt mount ripped a section of metal from the sill when I tried to undo it (or maybe it was my sheer brute strength :wink: ) but either way I didnt want to repair as on some parts you can reweld and paint over one side, but not the other so its just going to come back eventually..
