Do you like other Renaults?

Postby 2P5T » Tue May 22, 2007 4:48 pm

Potentially sacriligious thread from a newbie!

Other than the A110/ A310 (not Renaults but ...) and Renault's own GTA and A610, I've lost much of the enthusiasm I may have had for other models back in the day. I used to care for the 5 GT Turbo but now the only ones I can think of that really appeal are the mid-engined Fives and Clios - 5 Turbo / 5 Turbo 2 / Clio V6 and of couse, the Sport Spider which, I feel could have done with the "A" on it.

Mind you, I'm not sure I'd have a Spider over an Elise. :? I shouldn't have said that here, I'll get my coat. I'll not say anything about styling .. Avantime, Vel Satis. OK, I'll give it a rest now.

Because they're Alpines. As in - conceived and built by an independent company, whereas the GTA, although clearly the successor of the A310 was an in-house development by Renault itself. No? Maybe I'm incorrect regarding Alpine being totally independent of Renault.

Renault had a major hand in Alpine since about 68 which was long before the A310 was designed, although their real influence didn't come in until 73 or there abouts.

I've had 3 - '8's, 1 - 8G, 1 - 10, & 2- '5's (i've missed something....)
Now got 1 - 5, 1 - 21, 1 - A110 & 2 - A310 V6s

Very little interest in new cars (especially renault) but if money were no object then I'd look at a 197, R26 and Avantime.

As Andy says they are still basically all Renault's or at the very least heavily influenced and/or financed.

At the end of 1967 Renault gave its full support and entire racing budget to Alpine.

Rough guide:

Pre 73 (& all A110's) 'Alpine-Renault'

Post 73 'Renault Alpine' as the balance of ownership shifted.

(And yes I know what it says on the oval plate  )

More history here: http://www.renaultalpineownersclub.com/ ... story1.htm

The 78' Le Mans winning car was technically an Alpine A442 but still had a great big 'Renault Alpine V6' sticker on the front!

I guess most people on here including myself appreciate a wide range of Renaults but mostly the older more interesting stuff.

Out of the newer cars I wouldn't say no to a Spider, Clio V6 or for a runabout Renaultsport Twingo 170bhp (have to wait until 2008 for that one!).

Definately have to get an Avantime for an everday car. Such great value. Gutted to miss the sub £5K V6 Avantgarde last week.

The only other Renault I've owned was a Fuego (non turbo). I loved it! Did 10,000's miles in it.

One was up for grabs a short while ago. If I didn't have my X1/9 as well as my GTA, I'd have jumped at the chance of having it.

Spider's cool - maybe one day........

Have owned 9 Renault 5 GT Turbo's, and a 5 automatic, as of course thye GTA.

DOn't really like the A110 or A310, too sixties and seventies for my liking. I'm an 80's kid wuith a penchant for 80's cars! :D

I am however a massive fan of the Clio V6 255 and will at some point ending up owning one(Don't like the blue plsatic dash in the earlier car). Question though, is it worth selling the GTA for? Everybody who I've asked about this seems to think not. They all say, it's still just a clio where the GTA is a different league of car from the outset.

I'm also not convinced that the driving experience would be anywhere near as involving as the GTA. Not a fan of ABS and power steering TBH.

Will no doubt test drive one in the near future and make a decision one way or the other. :)

I think Renault are one of the few manufacturers that still dare to be different (shakin that ass!!! )
I love the 4, 8, 17, 5 Gordini, 5T1, 5T2, Clio V6, Spider, Avantime, Megane R26 and the Clio Williams...not many manufacturers have produced so many models I'd consider buying.

Desireable Renaults

Postby Tony Smith » Fri May 25, 2007 7:37 pm

I've had 4 GTA turbo's a GTA atmo, 9 (yes nine) 21 turbos (2 Quadras). 5 Gordini, 5 Gordini Turbo (with 180 bhp - faster than a GTA  ), a 19 16V, Clio 16V, an 11 Turbo, 2 x 5GT turbo's, an A310 V6, Spider Trophy, Safrane RT, Laguna 2.0, er I think thats it! Favourites - undoubtedly my Black GTA turbo, good 5 GT Turbos are great fun and the 19 16V's are really underated, not that quick but they drive and handle really well in my opinion and cheap as chips too.
Will probably get a 255 V6 Clio in a year or 2 (not keen on the phase 1's - sorry Phillippo  ) they have alot of carisma. New 197 leaves me completely cold - needs the 225 Megane engine! The Megane turbos make a good daily driver compromise but I'll wait a few years until there £1500 before trying one! I like 8 G's - (but silly money) and A110's (even sillier money!) and I don't find them pleasant to drive.
Alpines - GTA 3.0 Turbo, GTA 3.0 Inj (Project DD), GTA 6.2 V8 (500 bhp) , R32 Skyline GTR, BMW Alpina B10 635 Highline, Alpina B10 E39 5 Series, Jaguar 4.2 XKR, Laguna 205GT, BMW 120d.
