Ive signed it! They are a bunch of fools......they are so worried about carbon foorprints that they forget every new car creates a massive one when its being made compared to the extra fuel an older car uses.

Peterg, I am 100% with your principle on this one. Any idea what the total carbon foot print of a newly manufactured car is
When my LS400 dies, I'll just get another well run in model.

Don't get me started on hybrids.....

( remember reading a stat which I fail to remember precisely, but it was something like: the pollution caused by the manufacture of a new "clean" car is more than the pollution generated by a 20 year old car in 200,000 miles)

oh sh1t, I'll be doing a lot more than 200,000 miles in my LS400.
but it is just 11 years old, with 2 cats, so I guess its much less poluting than a 20 year old (like a GTA).

About 60-70% of a cars expected total 'craddle to grave' impact is in manufacture - 30-40% in actually running it.

100K mile+ GTAs running over 18 years you can see the percentages are very favourable.

Obviously no-one in government would want to point this out. Where would the economy be if people stopped buying new cars or half the useless tat that people feast on!

There are a number of studies that would prove it's better to have a new car, but it is a case of 'lies, damned lies and statistics (you can prove anything with figures)' as they don't take into account the 'carbon' cost of mining the ore, transporting the ore and the amazing power consumption of the blast furnaces which are needed to produce the pig iron. Some of the studies actually start at the assembly (car plant) stage and don't consider any of the actions prior to that.

And this is also the crazy thing about the Government harping on about recycling.
It is actually better to REDUCE ones use of "stuff" and to REUSE ones "stuff" before actually recycling it.
This is why I feel it is better to re-use an old car rather than recycle it. Thanks for confirming my thoughts.

bearing in mind that the ship that brings the car to the UK from say Japan will burn more fuel on that trip than all the cars will on board during their 'lives' .... and it makes a mockery of the whole hybrid thing
