Lumpy engine.... Firing on all 5

Postby simontaylor » Wed Mar 28, 2007 10:46 pm

Only on an Alpine....
Since putting the engine back in the car, it seems VERY lumpy on idle, like it is only firing on 5 cylinders.
I have removed, examined and cleaned the plugs and checked that all the HT leads are firmly clipped into place.
While the car is running, I have disconnected the HT leads in turn and 4 cause the car to idle worse and 2 make no difference at all (the front 2 cylinders by coincidence). I have inserted a plug into the suspect HT lead from a front cylinder and there were loads of spaks.
Oh yes, I have checked the earth, twice now.

Any suggestions?

On the two that make no difference, have you got the two leads backwards?

Simple stuff first :D

Good point, I'll check that at first light tomorrow.
I did replece the dizzy cap while the engine was out, however I did also mark up and number the leads 1-7 from L-R before I removed them, but I will still double check.

More than 1 blind spot Martin, I seem to have a dys-lex-lic temdancy, now I don't even seem to be able to count up to 7.
Feking lectrics !
Whoos  , the dizzy leads for cylinders 1 & 4 were the wrong way round, Now I'm purring on all 6 pots, well smooth.
Amazing how it started so well on just 4 pots though.

Cheers :D I'll be racing this weekend, so long as I get an MOT this afternoon

They don't actually need all the spark plugs either as I found out when one undid itself and blew out of the engine at dead on the legal motorway limit of 70mph  , breaking the HT lead. She kept running - quite smoothly as well. The noise was a bit of a giveaway though!

At that moment I thought my nice shiny new GTA that I'd only had for three weeks had gone bang big time - it made a hell of a noise! I had that unpleasant sinking feeling  I can't tell you how relieved I was when I opened the engine cover.

Very wierd - never had this before on any car. I just put the plug back - bodged the lead back together to get home - nice shiny new set of leads and it's been perfect since.
