I have to confess I have cable tied the bottom section where the bolts attatch to the rad !

It was one of the silly little bolts at the top that broke. I was thinking about a small (very short) self tapping screw, but not sure what is above there. I know that the screen wash bottle is directly above?

Thanks

If you are concerned about what is above, just poke a bit of wire up through the whole and see what clearance you have, i would guess you will be fine...... but take no responsability or make any guarantees.

Fix one problem find another! Rad is back in and bumper is back on. Flushed and bled system and all was fine.

Took car out at weekend and took some photos for the insurance (guaranteed value) and when taking some pictures of the engine bay noticed some steam from the engine bay. Seems I have a small leak on the offside at the back of the engine which is dropping down onto the manifold. Had a look last night and it seems to be dripping down the off the top metal pipe the runs from the back of the car to the front. Checked the pipe joins (put some additional Jubliee clips around it a as well) there and all ok. Looks like top pipe is leaking around the join to the bulkhead :0( Praying that it is not this as guess will have to cut this section out and join with a silicon pipe futher down. Has anybody done this before and how easy is it, especially from an access point of view? How is the pipe attached to the bulkhead? Is it one bolt?

I assume that the pipe is leaking unless there is another water pipe above this pipe and it is leaking down onto it, I will check this tonight.

Those pipes run all the way to the front .Depends where exactly they are leaking .Worst case scenario ,engine out to replace

Looks like leaking on joint to chassis, just before it dives down to go under car, top pipe, unless there is another pipe above leaking down onto it?

Right. stripped it down last night and there is a small (under 1mm) crack in the top pipe just before the clamp.

Also the top pipe has a small pipe welded to the top of it, anyone know what this is for. It is a water pipe but can't tell where it goes?

Thanks,
Brad

You were asking about the pipes, these are the ones lee mentioned that go to the front of the car, all steel, long in length and can only be replaced with the engine out. "Sometimes" I think you can just cut them back and fabricate a replacement or use hose.
The 2 black pipes are the main radiator feed and return, and the red pipe goes onto the oil filter cooler plate (not sure why it goes to the front of the car, perhaps to the cabin heater matrix?)

Lots of other 'interesting' parts can be seen in this picture too.

Thanks Simon that picture is very helpful. Thanks a lot for posting that.

My pipe is nowhere near as rusty as that one. On the outside it is clean as can be, no marks at all. Where the small hole (under 1mm) is there are no rust marks or rust stains, just a small crack that cannot be seen, only felt with a finger nail. Will either cut out and replace with pipe as not too far down, or seal with chemical metal.

Still cant work out what the very small pipe on top of the water pipe is for though? This will be in the way if I cut the pipe as it is welded to it?

Thanks

Try and trace this small pipe, I'm breaking a late car at the moment(1990) and the breather off the fuel tank goes down past the brake servo then onto a small pipe and runs all the way to the back of the car, could yours be this?

My 1988 model just has a rubber pipe going past the servo then pokes out the plastic undertray at the front, maybe the reason for my fuel stench.

Yes the pipe turns into a rubber braded pipe and then goes to the back of the car somewhere, along the inside of the inner offside wing.

Sounds like the one.

Why would the breather run the whole length of the car?

So the fumes are behind you when in traffic, mine is fine when driving but when I stop I'm as high as a kite!
