coolant

Postby pgoldsmith » Sat Feb 24, 2007 7:50 pm

Ever since I've owned the car (6 years now) it's lost around 1/2 a pint of coolant per month. Cant see any evidence of a leak, it doesnt seem to smoke / have much vapour from the exhaust. Just wondered if it was normal ??
I notice the handbook states that it's normal for oil to be topped up due to the losses within the turbo ?? As the turbo is so damm hot perhaps it evaporates coolant as well ?
Should I stop worrying :?:

I would not expect a healthy engine to consume water at all, unless it is steam driven.
I would not worry too much, but a bit of trouble shooting might be a good idea. sometimes leaks drip onto hot parts of the engine and the water vapourises and you cant see it. perhaps get the water system pressure tested when the car is stone cold and see if the level drops at all or you get any visable drips?

Most common leak place where you don't notice it is in the middle of the V, from the water pump pipes. Evaporates as it hits the engine..

Thanks, there are a couple of hose joints that have some off white /greyish deposit round them. May be a slight weep there perhaps.

It goes in for an MOT :( soon so I'll ask them to do a pressure check then.
