What were your intake temps on these runs? From what you've said, it might suggest your pre-rad massively exceeds your CC for efficiency.

The trouble is, that within a few seconds, any heat in the CC is moved away by the cycling water. I calculated that I have 15 seconds for a comlete cycle of water.

what about building a spoiler onto the roof (like lancia integrale had) and placing a heat exchanger into it? this would be the ultimate solution, as long as the car mooves.

Was just thinking of the restriction on the cc front mounted rad and the main rad whith the fan stuck in front Dave, when the car is rolling i suppose no fans will need to be on? when its stood the aux puller fan on the main rad is going to be on anyway, just a thought?

Ah, but when its stood, all that lovely heat from the main radiator is warming up the pre-rad until the main fan kicks in...

I would always recommend using the fan. It is a high flowing unit.

Well, the chargecooler is the ultimate solution, and room under the bonnet to add an ice slush box 8)

I'd definitely keep the pre-rad away from the main rad. Having a decent air flow over the pre-rad when the car moves is less important than just having it exposed to outside air with a fan on the back, thanks to the thermal mass of all that water. This theory only falls down if you run flat out for extended periods.

There's no problem having the prerad in front of the water rad, just make sure its in the place of as much airflow as possible. The fan is just required for low speed cooling, and to prevent heat soak. Even with a little vehicle speed, there won't be any heat soak from the engine rad to the pre rad. Just make sure there is a gap between the two.

yes, david, the liquid intercooler is it, i was talking about the heat exchanger for it, or the pre rad, if you will. thats why i used this set up on my car as well.

it would be unwise, however, to underestimate the cooling recquirements. for 300 hp the air cooling need is roughly 40 kw. at a dt of 50 c° this means 13 l/min of coolant flow. i dont think you would want to heat up the cooling liquid to 90 c° though, so at dt of 10 c° its 65 l/min of coolant flow to get an in temp of 40 c° and an out temp of 50 c° (pre rad, that is). now if you imagine cooling 40 kw at an dt of 25 c° (ambient= 20 c°), it works out to 0.046 m2 of air at 100 km/h. the core then should be 2 x 0.046 = 0.9 m2 and due to pressure drop and inefficiencies probably 0.18 m2.
that is 20 x 90 cm at an average speed of 100 km/h. this also casts a light on the pumping requirements. no way to get this through the a/c radiator for example.

the above is for a steady 300 hp. on the track this will only be 200 hp on the average and for street driving, where you occasionally floor it, the pre rad becomes marginal.

by the way the buffering capability of 5 l at dt of 5 c°of coolant is roughly 2.4 seconds. it doesnt sound like much, but it will sure cut of the worst pikes in intake temp (the ones, you can hardly even measure, because they occure that fast).

Not a Red Dwarf fan, then Pete? Series 3, episode 1, "Backwards" the very last scene.

Yep, not just a geek about engines.......
