Smokey Turbo???

Postby spryboy1974 » Mon Nov 06, 2006 12:21 pm

After enjoying a couple of weeks of trouble free motoring my engine has started to smoke!

I have recently had the engine apart to do the head gasket,(which failed due to the cooling fans not working),and there has been no sign of any smoke until yesterday.

I was driving at slow speed through the lanes and was on overrun a lot of the time. When i came to park up there was a lot of oil smoke pouring out of the exhaust.By the time i had got home there was nothing at all!!!!???

When the head gasket initially went the smoke symptons started out the same until i noticed the coolant was dissapearing and i had a serious problem.

Stupidly i did not get the head skimmed or block checked, but this was only because the engine never got really hot,i.e boil over. (then again it may have done with the previous owner)!

The turbocharger itself isn't very old and has done little mileage so surely this can't be the problem??

Please help, its too embarrasing to drive around in a smokey alp!!!

Check you have connected all the breathers up correctly and they are not blocked..

Also, does it smoke on boost or just at idle?

The guaze in the filler cap is nice and clean as is the hose from this to the inlet hose.
I haven't checked the valve on the inlet manifold yet but not sure this would cause the problem!?

The car only seems to smoke occasionally at idle not boost, seems more so after a lot of overrun.

Not sure if i put too much oil in,i must have put in about 7.5litres and it still doesn't read full on the dipstick!?

That's good then!?

Any ideas where i can get the correct one?

I had to take the dipstick tube out when i had the heads off and i replaced the o ring as it was split,i'm sure that it couldn't be in wrong to give the false reading??

What you really need to do is drain and refil to the correct level as stated in the handbook, then mark your own notches on the dipstick. :)

Thanks for the help David.

Seeing as though i have only just put in new oil i will probably leave it until the engine burns off the excess oil naturally.

Hopefully this will turn out to be the problem and nothing more sinister!!!

why not drain or syphon out a couple of litres and see for sure, now. Just in case it is something sinister that could get worse and more expensive?

If i hace over filled it then it will only be by about half a litre.

The engine sounds fine under all driving conditions so surely it can't be that bad!?

Famous last words......!?
