Help and Advice Please - Misfire

My bumper comes of very easily Modified slightly so only 2 main fixings and some tie wraps Come to think of it ,the rear bumpers like that as well after cleaning the intercooler They do tend to over-engineer these GTA's

Maybe the way the body and chassis is made is over engineered, it's the way all the ancillaries and wiring is bolted to it that seems rather under-engineered to me!

No need to remove the bumper, just remove the undertray and you can access the front fuel filter and pump very easily. I use two ramps and scaffold boards as well and this seems to work well.

I happen to think it's very well constructed actually! I've owned other French cars which I think have been very well screwed together (Citroen AX excluded!) Just think the wiring is abysmal! Maybe it just the age of the thing to be fair!

Mine is up on jacks in the garage at the front at the monent.
You can easily see the front fuel pump from the passengers side with wheel removed and get good access to it by 'only' dropping the rear undertray.

Changed the main fuel pump and filter but car is still cutting out. It's not so much a missfire problem now, but a cutting out problem. Seems to only do it once warmed up and will restart again immediately, allowing me to drive on a bit further before cutting out again.

Haven't got round to taking the undertray off and checking the front pump and filter yet but I'm begining to think it's some sort of electrical fault causing a breakdown when hot.

I've checked the wiring loom multi-plug situated inside the engine bay offside rear corner above the air filter and all the connections look fine, not corroded or loose. I've also got some new plugs to fit and am considering new HT leads, as Peter suggested.

Also, there's a whining noise, which rises with revs and I think it's coming from the alternator. Might this be significant?

Anything else to to check? Could it be a faulty TDC sensor? How much is a new one from a stealer?

Any problems with starting?. Ive had a car with a duff alternator, and when the voltage dropped low enough, the ignition pack cut out.

Could also be overcharging...

Can you get a multimeter/voltmeter on it when running?

No problem with starting at all. The alternator was reconditioned about three years ago but I'll see if I can test it.

Checked the battery with a voltmeter and was only getting 12 volts. Started the car and it dropped to 11.5 volts. I turned on all the electrics; lights, cabin fan, wipers etc and the car cut out. Obviously this will be affecting the fuel pump too, so I'm assuming that will be the cause of the cutting out - duff alternator. Also, the voltage dropped to 8 volts when I started the car and turned the starter motor over.

So I've removed the alternator and will be taking it for repair or replacement.

Wait until I've put a new one on and tested it first! Will Monopoly money be okay?

Fitted my reconditioned alternator today. Had the windings inside replaced because the old one was earthing, hence the reason the voltage was draining away and the fuel pump not getting enough power, causing the cutting out etc.

Took it for a couple of lengthy test drives and all seems well again! Seems to go like a rocket after driving my diesel Pug all week!
