Turbo or Atmo

For sprinting/hillclimb an atmo would be best, no ? Lots of corners ,no real straights .Or even :shock: horror .................310 :lol:

I'm begining to beleive the same myself.........Atmo is the way to go.
I too would be very interested to hear what "simon says"?

Often over a ton on the circuit sprints, so maybe a turbo is better suited to sprints instead of hill climbs.
I think Tim Jeffries had good success with his A610 turbo in previous years of the Tunbrige Wells sprint championship.

Ive never driven an atmo, but the turbo is pretty well suited, so much torque low down and not a lot of lag....its all about learning to drive the car youve got....turbo lag is no more of a problem for me than waiting for an engine to come on cam once you know what to do. Atmos are expensive to tune to get similar results, and similar torque and power levels mill move the whole lot up the rev range, defeating the objective of running an atmo!

I knew you'd say that :lol: :lol: The lag must come in to it surely :?
I've driven both and am no expert :roll: but the atmo does feel a lot quicker .

Easier to drive yes, faster I would suggest not...the turbo has such a pile of torque and power once its spinning....keeping it spinning is where the problem lies. I have a nice throttle blip and ramming it into 1st technique for tight corners that means its rarely off boost! What will the car do in 1st flat out by the way...anyone???

Blipping the throttle aids gear change when going down,
Matching revs concept. But as to aid turbo lag not so sure you can rev the engine all you like the turbo will only spin when under load.(i.e in gear and forcing air in)

the atmo has a very smooth power delivery. torque is curve is very flat and constant from very low revs and peaks at 5800 rpm but is still making power to 7000 rpm. (wont get near those revs with the turbo with standard rev limiter!)

after finishing 3rd in class in the N.I. hillclimb championship i think we will need an ATB diff and maybe re-build a gearbox to suit the hills better.

having driven both turbo and atmo on a track i would agree that the turbo is faster on the straights but not great when off boost in the bends.

one last thing, unless you had an anti-lag system i think the atmo is more controlable/adjustable with the throttle on slippy corners or when the car is sliding around.

The factory test drivers preferred the Atmo and were quicker round short circuits. The turbo gains when there are long straights. The factory test drivers agreed that the 24V atmo was the ideal version unfortunately they never made it!

I"ve never driven a Turbo so i"ve no idea what its like but i"m really pleased with the way my Atmo pulls from no revs at all and then it kicks in even harder from 4500 revs onwards, its got power at any revs. Just floor it and it goes instantly.
never really ever thought that i would own a gta, but am i happy that i do!!.
