Bet they didn't replace the pistons though ,a rebuild has varying degrees of work  They could have just put new rings/gaskets on .

Yep very few people ever put new pistons in during a rebuild unless they're pitted.
I'm just here for the gasoline.

It was a recon engine, but it would appear that the company arent very reputable DG knows them...it doesnt have the original engine no...it may even be that they jet washed an old engine that ran and fitted it as a recon item.
No need to get the engine out its getting rings, pistons and liner seals, all the gaskets are new as are the bearings.....it'll be back together by Thursday night...I hope!!!
Forged pistons would be nice, but even Sierra Cossie ones will cost the best part of a grand.
I suspect the damage was done when the ECU was originally set up with the monster torque at the bottom end as there were odd noises under boost before it went back for the 2nd session......I believed it was something like a rattling bolt....D'oh!!!! The torque is slightly lower at the bottom end now.....once its up and running again I may well have another session on the rollers to pep up the top end power and and loose a few of those low down lbs!

Forget the turbo - that's on the filtered side of the oil filter. What you need to check is the surfaces on the inside of the oil pump. We recently had a stage II engine let go on the Nurburgring thanks to oil starvation and although it was only a conrod bearing that let go, the shrapnel ate the oil pump housing in a matter of seconds. If the inside of the oil pump housing is not perfectly smooth to the touch, the block is scrap.

I've got two Z7U's going spare :-D

When that piston came out it was in one piece....it only came apart after I started removing the rings. 2 others have cracks in them but are also still intact.

So why do we have inline turbo oil filters? Can something not break away in the engine and cause contamination in the filtered side... :?:

I thought that your engine was rebuilt before you purchased the car, perhaps they used inferior quality pistons?

And these...

www.forgedpistons.co.uk

Problem is they are not made in the UK, so you would have to get the gudgeon pin hole machined at an engineers.

not much use then.......

accralite are made in the UK..... in the midlands..... birmingham to be exact...... and race proven ..... like original equipment in Renault race engines built by sodemo v6 and 4 pots.......must be the first choice then..... :? :?

Sorry, bit blunt on my post. The oil circuit goes from pump to filter, then there's a load of internal pipework inside the block which emerges all over the place but you can see the route it takes when you have a timing cover off. It goes literally strait from the filter to the feed line to the turbo so an in-line filter is a moot point and only really necessary if you don't trust your main filter. I've leant the hard way that the oil pump housing bites the dust first. FYI on all the later even fire engines, the oil pump is deeper and has more teeth on the gears.

Yes, but it also connects to the channels that lead to the cams and across the block, so it all needs to be double and triple checked..

An advisible way to to run a rebuilt engine in without the turbo, by using a blanked off turbine housing and connecting the feet and return, run the engine in for a while, then another oil change and filter, and re-install the turbo, but really only do this when you have previously had alot of contamination in the oil system.

..or, fit an inline turbo filter.. :)

Pete probably has been lucky.

End of the day, nothing should be ignored. Its not worth writing off £500 of turbo, just because one didnt take precautions.
