Fixed the fuel meter thing

Postby rupert » Sat Aug 05, 2006 8:56 pm

I worked out that the fault in my case was the sender unit on the tank by following the diagnostic instructions in the manual.
Took it out, there is a long rheostat thing and a float in a long s/s tube, the supply wire to the float had broken, simple as that, soldered it together and all ok again! :D

Nice one! My fuel gauge hadn't been working for ages and after reading this I took my sender unit apart and found exactly the same problem. The wire to the float was broken. I soldered it back together and it's working again! :D Cheers!

Fuel sender

Postby Miles » Sat Aug 12, 2006 11:11 pm

Fixed mine in exactly the same way 3 years ago did mention it on this forum.
However at the time purchased new sender ,which is still in box in garage..
The only problem with soldering it, is a few days after the event (prior to new sender arriving which took weeks) started thinking which is always a bad thing. That wire is in neat fuel ops..
But managed to get over it by constantly telling myself it must be a bloody small voltage passing down it.
Im still here 3 years on.
But i did spray paint mine at the time. to seal it.
Does make you wonder though.

paint

. Not 100%
Was three years ago, was either electolube lacquer, yellow etch primer or grey primer.
But no doubt it will have dissolved by now anyway.
The sensor from memory was connected with a thin wire white in colour, which is why I painted it, very fragile. Looked similar to those slinky spring thingamajigs. (This was the first place I looked when the gauge stopped working, I took float sensor out found the broken wire and without thinking resoldered it then painted it, it was only after I had refitted it that it dawned on me this was inside the fuel tank, that’s when I started to worry).
