Engine identification

Postby mehari james » Thu Jul 20, 2006 3:03 am

Hello,

I'm trying to MOT my 88 turbo (F747) down here in Australia but can not find where the engine number is hidden or whether it is stamped on or a plate.

I'm sure you guys know.

Thank you!

James

Best to do it before it gets dark though!
An old toothbruch may come in handy to clean it so the MOT tester can see it too.

I have torch, degreaser and rag in hand. The concrete floor is looking rather cold though.

It's been no end of fun to try and mot it here in the colonies, i had to fit intrusion bars in the doors, child restraint anchorages, and now a cat.converter. They also wanted an unleaded size fuel filler and may have to have the engine number stamped as they are reluctant to accept a plate.

If you read all of the linked thread, the engine number should also be stamped on the rear of the RH head, no need to get under the car for that either.

Sounds like you need to find a friendlier MOT tester!

Do you have to put ROO bars on it too?

No, no roo bars. The alpine is shapley enough to scoop the roos up and over onto the following car.

It seems getting it registerd varies from state to state, All fo them difficult. They are trying to stop high powered japanese grey imports here and the alpine fell into their catchment.

My next hurdle is the UK rego chassis no starts with XXX and not VFA ( why?) and so my car is not recognised as the one imported.

Just a thought don't want to shock you but, the only time I had a different to the norm VIN Plate number was a few years back, I had a 21 Turbo Quadra which after some investigation turned out to have been written off and been re-shelled

Ah, It's not uncommon here either. On your V10 or is it V5 doc? it's been a few years since i lived in the UK, does your chassis no start with XXX?

Even on the UK rego docs?

My car certainly has the correct plate and stamps on the chassis, and they match the rego docs, except the XXX instead of the VFA. I assume the person registering it when new decided the vfa was not part of the chassis no and filled the space with XXX.

perhaps you could use the old MOTs as supporting paperwork for the VIN, surely they have VFA..... on them.

Or call or write to the UK DVLA and ask them to reissue the v5 with the coirrect VIN on it. (time I suppose, but I think they have a help line)

Good Point. I'm still waiting on the history, but i could contact the DVLA and ask them to re-issue the V5. Thank you.

I've written to the dept. of roads here to try and get around the XXX so will have to wait for them to respond.

For a small fee, something like £6 the DVLA will issue a complete history to you, I think others have done this, so do a searh on this site.

I have also heard that the helpline is infact quite helpfull.

Good Luck.
