What's the original spec :?: The only # I can find is .36 on the exhaust housing .

0.36 a/r T3 turbine housing and a 50 trim compressor wheel in a 0.42 a/r housing
(according to David G in an old post)

I've taken the plunge and the GTA's off the road :shock: RTOC Nat day showed its shortcomings on the cooling front ,so its strip and wrap time + a lot of other bits and bobs one of which is replacing the original, 120k T3 .
Never taken one to bits before ,but it came off easily enough and after a good old soak it came to pieces .I want to try and rebuild it myself and am about to order a 360 degree refurb kit ( £130 ebay ) ??
Any advice on upgrade combinations most welcome ...................... :mrgreen:

Give it a go, tis worth it if it is knackered. but still be prepared to maybe get it reconned properly..

The difference between rebuilding a turbo yourself, and having a company do it, is they can check all the tollerances on the wheels to housings, shaft thickness and wear and rebalance the thing..

If the shaft is scored or worn (or scorched) then it will wear the bearings or seal again, and it could smoke or fail again. If the compressor or turbine wheel have excess tollerance through wear to their housings, then the turbo has to work double time to maintain the original boost level, and thus wears out quicker. This then coupled with a turbo that hasnt been rebalanced means that it dies even quicker..

Turbo rebuilding companies first strip the whole turbo down, then bead blast every component. This will also clear any debris from the oil ways to prevent contamination when later fitted back on the car. Then all the parts are checked for tollerance, if they are too far gone, they are replaced for new. Most of the time only the housings are used, most of the 'spinny' bits are always replaced.

As for the old 270 degree bearing against the 360 degree unit, no one has ever answered what is better. 360 degree thrust bearing is meant to be better as it is 360 degress round, but saying that, no modified turbos have ever lasted 100k miles, yet the original units can, even with increased boost.

You have to consider why Garrett used a 270 degree in the first place. There must be method in their madness!

I'm waiting for the rebuild kit to arrive ,got the 360 kit .The shaft shows slight scoring on the exhaust end bearing surface ,this is where the oil holes are on the bearing .I've measured the shaft and it is not out of round or tapering, 0.3995" diameter :mrgreen: I don't know what fit they should be but it's ali to steel .I have bead blasted the housings etc and cleaned the wheels , will give it a try and see how it goes , theory being I should find out fairly quickly if it's OK and if not I will have a rebuilt core and lots of new bits to bolt to .
A new turbine shaft is ?? , price for a comp wheel, 60 trim, £80 ????

Got the 360 rebuild kit ,you have to drill and tap the housing to take 3 m4 screws as the fitting for the 270 is through the gap and star washer and of course there-be no gap on a 360 :lol:
Only prob is, I have brand new bearings so I now no my shaft is well worn :arrow: 0.004/5" :evil: Still ......it's a learning curve :roll:

Best prices please for T3 turbine shaft and comp wheel :lol: :lol:

Scrap all that :D Just been on to the 360 kit suppliers and the guy say's that mine has probably
been rebuilt and the shaft has been honed 0.005" under ,this is common and they supply bearings to suit Best part is he's sending them to me FOC 8) 8)

All rebuilt and back on the car :lol: Not to difficult a job if you're careful and note the alignment .The new 360 thrust bearing meant drilling and tapping 3 m4 ,these break into the water ways but seem to seal OK with a bit of hightemp gunk .Had to get smaller journal bearings as turbo had been rebuilt previous and the shaft was 5 thou under size ,lapped them in and it spins a treat and no play 8)
Bit of pissin about on the car resetting things ,actuator and bleed valve and now it pulls a treat ,and comes in slightly earlier .
Well worth a try if your turbo is a bit old and wobbly .

I'm having a bit of trouble with the boost ,at full throttle it's holding 15 psi well enough but will spike to 18 ,drop ,spike etc ,worse at 3/4 throttle where it jumps about even more :? :?: Actuator :?:
