Hello Everybody from the DeLorean nut....

Postby Stunned Monkey » Wed Jun 28, 2006 8:00 pm

Hi All, though it about time I stuck my nose in and said hello. Steve's only been on at me to do so for about a year now :-)

My name's Martin and I'm a DeLorean freak. I own two of the buggers and am the author of the article you may have read on our website all about the PRV (or at least what I've learnt about it!). My connections are largely stateside and with Volvo - both sources of parts for the engine that may surprise.

I have built some 5 PRV engines for DeLoreans now, including two high compression, high lift 2.8 K-Jet odd-fires, and have been working on an EFI drop-in for the same engines. I have also recently built and drove a twin turbo DeLorean engine which Steve may have posted photos of. This was my friend's car which came with one of the poxy mickey-mouse aftermarket turbo kits on it. As I had cannabalised an R25 Turbo engine for the block, it made sense to rebuild his DeLorean engine with the 25 turbo bits.

http://www.delorean.co.uk/DSCN2233.JPG

As you can see it's a bit of a hotch-potch of custom parts (eg the twin intercoolers across the back), the original DeLorean engine, the 25 turbo and a couple of GTA bits thrown in for good measure. We're using one of Dave's ECUs but I modified the stock 25 turbo flywheel (actually one I discovered on a DeLorean and promptly stole) to remove the silly double-teeth making it a 66/3 pattern. We had it running and went for a mapping session only to discover one of the turbos was shot. The result was a massive 87hp at the wheels!!! Waiting on a pair of turbos and we'll try again.

I've been building up a PRV graveyard in the workshop and currently have about 11 (I think) including two GTA Turbo engines, am XM 24v (which Steve's nicked) two low compression Lagunas, a dismantled Safrane lump, a couple of Volvo lumps and a Renault odd fire or two. Outside we have a dead 3 litre Saf which one of our customers killed the gearbox on. I'm planning on doing cams and dropping it in my DeLorean.

Anyway - quick plug for the business, any engine work you guys might need, feel free to give us a ring. www.delorean.co.uk

Martin, welcome.
There seems to be a lot of theiving going on in your life. Are you sure you are mixing with the right crowd?
As for that wiring loom, it sort of reminds me of something on a GTA........ Ah yes, the spagetti behind the centre console, a thousand and 1 wires all twisted around each other, and mostly yellow just like spagetti.
Good luck, I hope your second turbo will be enough to see you well past the 100bhp mark. What are you expecting to get out of it?
Being rear engined, do DeLoreons suffer with contained heat? I'd guess with 2 turbos you will see some heat saturation too. Any plans for a charge cooler or two?

Hi Martin - good to see you on here!

I assume the twin turbo is the one with those tiny wee little IHI units with the very stiff spindles you showed me when I was last down at your workshop.

By the way the rads done now and it's got two 10 inch fans on it rather than the standard Renault fan - much better.
I'm just here for the gasoline.

Hi Guys

The DeLorean loom is a lot more self-explanatory than the GTA's :-) And that photo was taken during the build, so it didn't stay looking like that!

The problem with the one knackered turbo was that they shared an inlet which meant the turbo that was working (and getting half the exhaust) was losing its boost through the air filter on the left turbo. We did try capping off that side and generated 2psi of boost but of course it was boosting the whole engine and getting half the exhaust. The turbos are IHI RHB52 which on the Legend Industries prototypes were boosting to 18psi. The "new" donor turbos are from 1.3 Fiat Puntos - a respectable amount of boost for a similar capacity so the turbine should be about right. The manifolds are nowhere near as free-flowing as the GTA's either.

The DeLorean does not suffer contained heat anywhere near as much as a GTA. The D has a louvered decklid and vented (and open) engine bay. The turbos are at the bottom at the back. I'll be happy with 200hp out of that car because the car itself isn't in the greatest shape. it was an auto too and has been converted.

Good to see some engine work, well done, but the dreaded RENAULT 25 V6 TURBO,line comes into it!!you know these cars are very rare now,and no-one gives a toss about them, just a cheap car to use there running gear in kit cars and GTA rebuilds, now before i get told off,i don,t mind this happening, honest i don,t,but the remains just get scrapped with no interest to 25 owners???you know theres around 10 known 25 turbos in G.B??i just wish people would offer the remains to 25 owners??i,ve had 2 remains offered to me,both i bought all that was useful for myself or other owners,i would really like to here from members who know of any 25 turbos that survive, roadworthy or not,my own car was being bought by a kit car person, but i beat them to it,its stunning, and very late, sorry to go on,my friend who has 2 gta,s just bought a 25 v6 turbo engine/box,from someone i know, but i bought everything else for £20,just to save it from the tip!

Paul has a really nice one. Here it is at Bromley last week: http://www.renaultalpineownersclub.com/DSC04491.JPG

There are two more on the way. £650 each if you want to save them being broken for the engine and box! If they do break then there will be plenty of spares if you are quick.

I appreciate the sentiments, but the 25 turbo engine I had I bought off ebay on its own several years ago, no gearbox. I recycled the block as a DeLorean engine and discoverd -after- running it for a while that the oil pump housing was scored up to hell due to a pair of eaten rocker arms on one bank. In the process of building the DeLorean twin turbo, all the internals and heads were used, with the dodgy rockers replaced. The GTA bits came from two GTA engines, one bought from Mr Gentleman, the other from a an engine/box I bought off ebay that came with the remains of a car attached. The carcass got donated to your cause :-)

I was not responsible for the death of any 25 turbos! I keep an eye open for 369 gearboxes, NOT UN1's because it's what the DeLorean uses and the end casings are worth their weight in gold, they also have the 3.8 final drive, unlike the D (and GTA) at 3.4.I still have a lot of the rest of the 25 turbo engine including the turbo itself and plan on building a 3 litre turbo at some point for my D but the exhaust and chargecooler gets expensive.

Anyone know of any 4 speed auto boxes going?

Here's the post I submitted to the DeLorean mailing list on 22nd May
---------------
This afternoon, #2727 moved under its own steam for the first time in
months. Only to be reversed out of the shop but considering it drove in
with a completely different engine and an automatic transmission, it was
a proud moment notching it into gear and lifting the clutch. It only has
to do an 800 mile round trip to Belfast within the week....The engine is
smooth with a capital smoo, I'm really starting to like this EFI
business... :-D

Yes, the intercoolers are slightly on the bonk, but this is what happens
when you rush things at the last minute because your radiator guy is
going on holiday.
Yes it did have an oil leak, that was sorted before the photos were taken
Yes, the air filters have now been oiled
No, there are no original Walker mufflers, but the Aston Martin exhaust
tips have wadding in them and really do make a difference
Yes the rear impact absorber has seen better days.
Yes the wiring has now been tidied up
The hoses are blue because we needed them in a hurry and that was the
only colour on the shelf
The intake pipwork has been re-worked and moved about to fit inside the
rear closing plate. It's very tight.

Off to a rolling road tomorrow for full mapping (I just got it idling
and warming up)

Yep Steve at Regal. I think he's probably cursing me as it took him ages to remove the bumper etc thanks to seized bolts.

Why is anyone worried about saving 25Ts??? Ok car, but hardly revolutionary or a part of motoring history...as long as theres one still runn ing who gives a  ? Not everything can be saved and unfortunately those cars that are ugly and average have to loose!

peter, thats a bit harsh I think.

Each to their own and all that. The 25T is a pretty rapid wagon..... with its intercooler up front and all.... it wont be heat saturated by the time it's at the top end of 3rd.

Will do. Price is non-negotiable though. That's the minimum break up price for the engine & box. Will be more with Tax & MOT.
