coilovers ?

can anyone tell me what the mod was to increase the stiffness of the shocks as they are on max setting and the car bounces far to much on the front

If it's bouncing on the stiffest setting then :shock: the :shock: may be :(

I now doing some stiffer spring kits for the original coil overs which upgrades them from the 25% extra that I had on the originals.

It appears that even though the standard springs are softer, they are so soft that infact some of the coils are touching (coil bind) thus making them harder! - The wonders of suspension!

These new spring kits will be available in a couple of weeks time and will sort out any bouncing, ill effects etc...

The shock ratings have been double checked and are far higher damping that the original shocks (nearly double on maximum setting), so this is not the issue. I have had a few samples physically checked on a dynometer. :)

Any other problems, drop me a mail, and Ill sort anything out... :)

I added rubber coil assistors (bought from Demon Tweeks) which has solved the problem.
I thought the new fronts were going to be in 2 1/2" type coils where the possibilities are endless??

He's talking more about the car dropping on bumps when very low and hitting the arches..

Dampers worh hard when moving quickly, but if you have a soft spring, the oscillation is slower and thus less damping force on it..

Im doing both !

There will be a new coil over kit coming out which will feature all new billet aluminium front and rear top mounts and poly bushes which will allow the use of 2.5" coil springs, which can be picked in any spring rate you like off the shelf.

It will be a more expensive kit (stg2), but will be supplied along side the existing kit (which will have the new uprated spring rates anyway)

The only downside of the new kit, is using 2.5" coils, as with most kits like this, means it is difficult to get a 'road friendly' ride. It is also possible to induce coil noise as the 2.5" coils meet the top mounts directly, so it will really be a motorsport or trackday kit only - but the choice is yours...

...also, the new topmount and spring kit (stg2) can be retro fitted to the previous coilover kit..(stg1)

The original coilover design (stg1), using the large springs is a far better quality setup, as the larger the spring diameter you have on suspension, the less likely to have coil bind, and less harsher ride, and the existing nylon cups that the springs sit in eliminate any road noise transmitted through the suspension.

Personally, the stage 1 kit, will be the best all round, but the 2.5" kit is good if you want to play around with spring rates etc...

On another point, can everybody I supplied a coil over kit to in the past, please check the rear bushes in the bottom mount. I have noticed that a couple of kits have had an insuffient circlip fitted which could cause the bottom bush to move and could cause missalignment, or damage to the shock.

If anybody has any problems, please tell me and I will get the shocks swapped over to the revised type.. :)

Don't worry about the tyres hitting the arches ,they will cut their own space ............

You see, on my old car, I had normal shocks, with a set of custom springs that I specified a few years back (the same rate as Im going to be using now on the new kit) which I thought would be very hard...

Now my car, even with the 18's, hardly cut into the arches and the car would'nt move up and down if you pushed down on the wing, but I assumed most people would'nt like it like this...but now I think about it, no one commented that it was a hard ride and it did sit very flat...

So yes,.. with the new spring rates, no cutting of arches (hopefully) and a flat ride..

People may want to think about uprating the rears too, as the car has a pendulum/seesaw effect, thus movement at the rear can upset the front, especially with a low fuel level..

That would tally exactly with my experience so far - that unless the dampers are set overly hard theres alot of bouciness at low speed and excessive dive under braking. And when the dampers are set hard enough to compensate the ride becomes extremely poor. Davids going to have a play with the ride height and settings before giving me the car back and I'll report my findings back

I think it depends where you live and what you do too. On my good roads round here, and Peter G also found they were fine (but could do with mods on a track), but if you live within a 20m radius of London, then no chance..., no much bounce on the front which makes it unsettling..

Trust me, all issues will be sorted. :)

Surly though Dave this is a fault from the manefacturer, If the kit was made for the GTA it should be right :?:

No, its not a manufacturing fault.

The standard springs are 25% softer than the coil over springs, but this makes them harder due to the fact that the coils are touching and then at some points the spring rate is infinate..

I was one the one that chose the 25% uprating, I designed the whole kit and application. I didnt assume the GTA would have a crap spring design like that in the first place.

Anyone wanting the new springs will get them in exchange free of charge, I can't say fairer than that! :D

Are you sure there isnt something else wrong with your car, I wouldnt have thought it was that bad. You have got the right springs on the right end of the car?? (just checking!) :lol:
