Will PeterG get a pay rise from this:

From Pistoheads:

New devices are all-automatic and always on

Redspeed digital speed cameraThe new age of digital speed cameras has begun.

On their way out are the familiar Gatsos, with their 'is it switched on, has it got film in it?' fear factor. On average, only about 10 per cent of them qualify on both grounds.

On the way in are digital speed cameras. Made by Redspeed International, they're going up in London -- 66 of them, as reported earlier (see link below) -- and in the Midlands. According to the Birmingham Post, you can expect to see them on motorways including the M5 contraflow near Bristol and the M6 Grayrigg works south of Penrith, Cumbria.

The point of the new cameras is that they remove a lot of physical handling that goes on now. It doesn't use radar like the Gatso, but sensors built into the road. According to the manufacturer, it captures three images: the first is a zoom shot showing the vehicle number plate, the second is a wide angle image including make, model, colour of car and the offence data. The system then delays for a period related to the vehicles speed, and captures a third frame, also a wide angle image showing the time delay between frames. The two wide-angle images can be used as evidence to show that the vehicle was moving at the time of the recording.

And instead of an officer or contractor going to the camera site, removing old film, filling it afresh, and taking your picture to Boots for processing, the digital image captured as you pass over the sensors is zapped over broadband links and a Notice of Intent to Prosecute (nit) issued automatically. It means the device can work 24 hours a day, and that you can assume all of them will be operational -- those that haven't been sadly vandalised, that is.

And it all cuts the costs of sending you a nit. Isn't that nice?

These new cameras have been installed in London for a while now.
The guys at Drive-Smart have already included them in their subscription-free database. They are mostly replacements for existing Gatso units, so little planning permission is required and thats why so many have been surprised to see them going up.
I "think" there is one on the North Circ around Walthamstow and it is not unknow for the nit to get home before you.

Not sure what the fuss is about speed cameras, i believe fixed gatsos are a good deterent in speeding hot spots and if you miss them you're probably otherwise engaged with your sat-nav, putting your lipstick on, picking your nose, on the phone or having some bitty....

Even digital cameras aren't a threat as one is lucky to even get near the speed limit as congestion is so bad these days (unless you're on two wheels).

It's the lurkers with laser guns you need to look out for, always remember (i was told by someone the other day), if you're handed an nit at the roadside, do not say a word and when your summons arrives showing the distance/speed the laser apparently 'locked-on', the reading must not be below 500ft or over 2000ft for enforcement purposes. So many drivers have surrendered their licenses without knowing this golden fact...

Obviously, I don't condone such behaviour, but where speed cameras are concerned I can't understand the use of these two words in a sentance together ! :P

Yes, like watching the road and the other idiot road users around me, increasingly more and more of whom these days seem intent on trying their best to crash into me!

There is a speed camera near me which I pass regulary. It's situated along a perfectly straight stretch of dual carriageway. For some reason most people seem to think it's a sixty limit. In fact it's a seventy limit. The number of people I've seen brake suddenly down to sixty when they see the camera... The actual accident black spot is further down the road on a bend over a flyover. Everyone could easily have speeded back up by then. But I suppose placing the camera on the bend where the actual accident black spot is just wouldn't work - it needs a nice straight to capture all that revenue!

Can I just point, out since my name appears at the start of this, that I have nothing whatsoever to do with speed cameras and nor do my shift!!!! I speed on a regular basis I'm afraid...but I always have a watchful eye out...people who have accrued numerous points for speeding arent concentrating enough on their driving otherwise they would be reading the road ahead, see the signs and be careful!!!!!! Obviously anyone can get caught out by a traffic car doing speeders....but at least with them you have a chance to reason and they can use a bit of discretion. Speed cameras are more about money than anything else, but the odd one or two do serve a purpose.
What really pisses me off is when people see the signs and slow down to 50mph (in a 60) or 25mph (in a thirty)...

I admit I slow down below the speed limit when cameras come up, because I am not sure that the accuracy of these instuments is up to scratch. In New South Wales ( Australia) there have been a number of cases where the speed camera was proven faulty, and hundreds of people had their fines waived.

The difference in NSW is there are fixed, marked cameras, but in Queensland they are mobile and hidden.
