Standard may come with 320 but the modern bloater (that the M3 now is) is a heavy thing.
The original M3 is different, Less power but much less kilos.
You shouldn't have a real problem with either, but on the twisty stuff the older M3 may need a couple more corners before you can really shake it off.
Either yours is desperate for a tune or the M3 isn't standard.

early e36 286bhp and later evo e36 321bhp i think!
both can rev like motor bikes, and have huge mid range punch so i would't be so surprised that you are being beaten at the traffic light gp!
these babies are good for 170+mph. :wink:

E36 M3 will make mincemeat of a standard GTA turbo

I can categorically say that E36 M3's are much much quicker than a standard GTA Turbo. I have a good friend with one and it is completely standard and runs high 13's at 102 mph on the strip. A chipped GTA with stainless exhaust (say 230-240bhp) runs mid 14's at 95. I've raced him in a standard GTA turbo and could just hold onto it 1st and 2nd gear but soon as I changed into 3rd he left me like I was standing still!
As for 450 bhp I think Davids 5-6k estimate is very conservative - I reckon nearer 10k if you did alot of the work yourself - proper engine management costs a grand and a similar amount to set up well. 1k for a decent T4, £500 for a decent exhaust, £500 for intercooler, probably another grand for a clutch set up to handle the power - thats 4K and you haven't touched the engine yet - 2K to rebuild to standard spec at a specialist, uprated gearbox, A610 driveshafts. And uprated brakes and suspension required to even have a chance of keeping it on the road. My 3.0 should have somewhere between 310-350 bhp at 12-15 psi boost. If you think 350bhp will give you almost 300 bhp per ton power to weight ratio and in excess of that in torque to weight ratio any GTA carring that sort of fire power should be seriously rapid.

Question is, how much is your engine conversion costing Tony??? A rough figure will do, sounds extremely interesting. What will the potential top end power be? Unfortunately due to the regs in speed events I'm stuck with the standard engine, but am aiming for 325bhp or thereabouts (ECU and cams as well as what Ive done).

Good question Peter. I genuinely haven't got a clue how much its cost. The engine was a brand new Safrane biturbo unit - with all ancillaries, less turbos, manifolds and ECU which I paid 2k for from a French specialist. On top of this I had to buy a new A610 inlet manifold, many pipes had to be changed, the distributor relocated and various ancillaries moved or swapped for GTA or A610 items due to the change from transverse to inline mounting. Then the was a brand new T38 hybrid from Turbo Technics which is the ultimate T3 based blower you can buy, quite radically machined to take various TO4E bits, An A610 clutch and radiator and probably loads more bits I've forgotton. The car already had a custom built chargecooler system I designed a few years ago which is very effective but normally the intercooling would require uprating as well and a HKS EVC4 for controlling the boost. So if you just add up that lot its getting on for 4K without including any labour although obviously you don't have to buy a brand new engine. I get a very substantial discount at ARR because we have a bit of a labour exchange going on which helps greatly. As for power it will be interesting to see what it does put out. A decatted A610 is about 270bhp and 290ft/lb so I would hope it would make 300ish at standard boost with the bigger turbo, I intend to run about 14-15psi to start with once the ECU side of things is sorted. I never intended for the car to be a racing car, I just want lots of really usable low down power and for the car to be reliable and good to drive.
