BHP value for money

Postby clee » Wed Mar 08, 2006 12:25 pm

I've been running the car without engine cover and with the rear glass open 25mm ,the bay temps are anything between 12 and 20 C degrees cooler 8) Rule of thumb 0.75 BHP/degree :?:
The catches I had made to open the rear glass £40 so £3.33/bhp

What is the change of temperature for the intake charge?

It's around 20 C drop across the intercooler .This remains the case with or without the mod but with the rear open the hot side is 10/12 cooler on average the throttle side is 12/16 lower .I think this is lower because it's getting a lower charge but also it isn't picking up as much bay heat .

On a motorway run the temps are down by 20 degrees ,I blasted up to Nottingham yesterday and the throttle side didn't get above 22 at cruising speed ,this is a surface reading so the actual charge temp is higher .

Only thing you have to remember, is the bay temp being -20 down, may only have (if that) a couple of degrees rating on the internal charge temps on boost..

Undo the jubilee clamps and stick the probes in the charge flow, not touching the walls of the tubing. Charge temps can jump 10's of degrees instantly under compression, where as the casting of the pipes cant..

There's always someone pissing on my parade  I shall stick the probes in the pipes ,but regardless of actual air temp the engine bay runs a lot cooler so thats got to be a good thing and worth a fair few BHP .
Value for money I says .Chargecooler -20 c = £58/BHP

Yes, Ive never had a problem with the inlet pipes getting hot when the car is constantly moving, only through saturation when the car is stationary for a while and the ambient heat rises, then the pipes are all hot..

So, no, it won't increase horsepower (it will stop you LOSING horsepower through saturation), where as a chargecooler or larger intercooler actually is a power increasing modification as it is directly cooling the charge..

So there!

Gaining or stoping loss  same thing in the end .Some tuners are so pedantic

 noooo........

Stopping loss means a 200bhp GTA won't drop to 190bhp. Gaining is taking a standard 200bhp GTA and making it 230bhp..

Remeber the main heat from the charge comes from the compression from the turbo. The outlet figures from the turbo pre intercooled will be over 200 degrees.

Plus anything which reduces the temp of the alternator/plug leads etc etc can only be good (down to a point).

Back to cooling, venting the engine bay area through opening the glass is ideal once the car has warmed up. I used to have the glass too hot to touch when it was closed off, and the saturation on the cold side of the intercooler can either trigger the air temp sensor to do strange things. Off boost throttle response suffers too... :(
