How Oily

Postby clee » Mon Jan 23, 2006 10:23 am

How much oil should a Turbo use :?: I now my turbo is a bit tired as shown by the stained intercooler pipe .It uses about 0.5 to 0.75 L per 1000 miles .I have noticed it spits a bit when started from cold ,though I haven't got a silencer to absorb any

If it's any consolation a Spider uses 1L every 1000 miles with ease and that's official from Renault..... :?

but you get spits when you start it could be a stitch in time.... type sign mate :?:

Yours is coming out through the turbo, that's why the pipes are green!

Samco are putting liners in the intercooler pipes now to protect them from oil as a lot of the GTA's have tired turbos.

It's running rich , I cant set the CO Pot properly without a pipe sensor .I'm hoping it's the Turbo only  Would explain why only seems to do it from dead cold .First blasts through the intercooler pushes the residue out :?:

If it's like any of the others it's probably got a few leaks underneath too.

Some are known to use several litres when parked

Yes  not worried about that as it helps to keep the subframe rust-free

My Turbo has 120 000 M and original turbo with some play, and yet only uses two thirds of a litre of oil over 3500 M, with a minimal amount in the intercooler pipe.

After looking at a few Turbos, most of them have tired distributor seals, and so leak down from there. My distributor cap had a half cupful of oil in it when I took it off. After fixing that leak, and replacing the tappet cover gaskets, mine does not leak at all.

My car doesnt use much oil at all and my turbo is almost new, but I do get an oilly film in the intercooler pipes....I dont think thats anything out of the ordinary. The engine breather also runs into this system. Its not running out or anything but running your finger inside the pipe leaves it black!

Mine has an oily film inside the intercooler pipes too and my car has a new (recon) turbo and all new gaskets apart from the sump. I think this is quite normal, as Peter says, probably because of the breather system.
