Turbo temperature

What temperature is the outside casing on the turbo likely to reach?

Damn hot!

Easiest way is to use a laser thermometer, I'm sure someone on here is going to have one and be able to tell you.
I'm just here for the gasoline.

Guestimate around 3/400 C :?
Aluminium has a melting point of about 6/700 C and expands quite a lot with increased temps so the tolerances would start to be affected above this I think .

I think you are a little high! The nomex turbo silicone hoses only go up to 220deg, so I suspect its less than that.

Nah man ,haven't touched it for years.................
The pipes are on the intake side and won't see a lot of heat .

Darren, if it is "only" 200 C, then I think you already have the tools to do this, so long as you do not clash with Sunday Lunch.

Think you may be way out at 200oC.

On the intake side the casing is cooled by the air flow passing through the compressor, and is protected from the hot side by shields and coolant (water and/or oil)
On the exhaust side things are much hotter, tempatures will be reached under certain conditions where the cast iron casing will start to glow. My T5 after a hard run will emit enough heat so as to scorch the hairs on the back of your hand at 30cm distance.

"Should my turbo/exhaust manifold glow red after driving?
Yes, the turbo/exhaust manifold can glow red under certain driving conditions. The exhaust gas temperature can reach over 1600F under high load operating conditions; i.e. towing, extended uphill driving, or extended high rpm/boost conditions."

Around 100 max, end of the day you can touch it quite easily, its damn hot, but not scalding...

On the intake side it is all much cooler than the exhaust side, probably in the order of +40 to 60oC up on the ambiant temp, but very dependant on the engine conditions, high boost = higher temp

Heat on the intake is caused by two major factors 1)heat bleed from the exhaust side, 2) heat generation by compression of the 'charge air' and the air friction of the turbine

Thanks....I just wanted to check I didnt need the (expensive) nomex lined silicone hose thats all! I'm happy what Ive bought will be fine.
