Safrane Biturbo Cheap or not?

Postby stephendell » Mon Dec 05, 2005 11:20 pm

Did someone get a bargain or was this about right?

I thought these usually went for more.

I think £4500 for a 10 year old big French saloon is a lot of money. Ok so its rare but it looks exactly like every other Safrane and lets face it they were a fairly bad car. Then there are the repair bills for a big old french car....and its not even an ordinary one! Imagine the shrugging and tutting when you took one of those down the garage to get parts  Lancia's similar effort (Thema 8.32) where they shoehorned a Ferrari V8 into a big Italian saloon (see big French saloon for details......Citroen excepted once in a blue moon) used to hold its value quite well at 5 and 6 years old (for what it was anyway) but has similarly fallen from grace as people are scared away by the potential monster bills for what is in essence an ordinary looking saloon car.

I saw the car while scooting through a search or two for some parts...... the thing is the 2nd hand car market is a little bit different on the continent compared with the uk, as you can buy cars easily in one country and register them in another quite easily, gives you a larger market and with this car especially in Germany..... anything with alot of motorway cruising speed as I expect this thing has, will go for a decent price if it's in a reasonable condition.I don't know the value of it in the UK......maybe £1200 at a push if it was perfect, we just sold a BMW 540 V8 touring, a rare and very fast beast for £1800 in good condition, equivalent in germany £3000 +

Expensive in France

Postby Tony Smith » Sun Dec 11, 2005 7:58 pm

I've seen good ones in the French classifieds for 10-12K Euros and they make good money in Germany too. Would be worth little in the UK - some fantastic value big cars out there. I think they would be a money pit of exponential proportions! Extremely complicated - 4wd gearbox, electronic damping, twin turbo V6 all virtually impossible to replace if they break as they were only fitted to this model (There's are a few 4WD normally aspirated 3.0 litres about too but you can bet you won't find one when you need it!)
Alpines - GTA 3.0 Turbo, GTA 3.0 Inj (Project DD), GTA 6.2 V8 (500 bhp) , R32 Skyline GTR, BMW Alpina B10 635 Highline, Alpina B10 E39 5 Series, Jaguar 4.2 XKR, Laguna 205GT, BMW 120d.

This one is "only" 6800 euro.
At the moment ther is one for sale in the Netherlands to (from 1996)
22.500 euro (no waranty), that is a lot of money!
Anyway 6800 euro for a 11 years old car is also a lot.
