i agree a chargecooler would be a good investment,but the only thing that would put me off is it splitting at high boost(20psi) and dumping water into the engine :shock:

Initial readings on standard intercooling ,purely to test probes so not to precise/controlled yet :roll:

Short test runs @ 16 PSI, average @ 37 C throttle side ,58 C @ turbo


Temp drop of 20-25 C .

Yes, going on the water temp @ 90 C .After a run the temp skyrockets with the Turbo 70 C + ,cool side mid 50's .When you turn off both pipes equalize out to mid 60's :shock: shows how much heat is trapped in there :evil:

Right, so basically the 'turbo' pipe is saturating the heat of the charge and retaining it, and the temps are then going up from that.

Thats why replacing that whole pipe with a chargecooler is a good idea, as then the main boost run before the standard intercooler is constantly being cooled before it can heat up.

The temp differential does seem to remain fairly constant ( not gospel :lol: I've yet to do proper test runs ) so the std intercooler is working as well as it can .Replacing the hot pipe with the charge unit will decrease the overall temps , I think the temp diff will remain as is .Modding the throttle plenum might be worth looking into as it picks up loads of heat when stationary,heat shield's ,reduced length :?:

The best thing to do to that is have it highly polished, but thats about it. Problem is alot of ambient heat from the engine rises up into it (coolant pipes in the V), unlike on a straight engine where it is hung on the side..

Can't find it now but there is a very 'cool' device, it's a 100 mm long tube ( goes in line with the intercooler pipe) with a jet teardrop suspended inside through which you pump Nitrogen or some such 8) Probably looks better than it delivers ....................

Got a similar kit going on the Alpine in the New Year (To cold to fit it now :( ) Mines NOS :lol: with purge valves :lol: :lol:

Right ,after a few proper test runs it would seem that the intercooler is not as bad as I thought :shock: It maintains a pretty good drop under full load giving about 24 C .At normal motorway speeds :wink: it was giving even more with a 30 C drop for quite some time .

The big problem is the massive amount of heat trapped in the bay ,as soon as you slow down the temps go up & up ,in 5 mins both sensors are reading 20 degrees more :evil: It then takes about 15 min to get the temps back down to normal levels .Opening the rear glass reduces the temps 15 C within a couple of minutes at speed and it would seem to stay cooler by some 10/15 degrees .
The hot side is getting well over 70 C when driving on local city roads ,so it,s not getting boosted ,but is soaking up all the bay heat :roll:

Lee, are you running about with the engine cover removed?

On the underside of the engine cover is trunking to take the cold air feed from the RH engine bay fan onto critical areas, including the turbo oil feed pipe and the 2 plenums. I wonder if there is much difference if the engine cover were to be replaced, perhaps they would cool a bit quicker???

Also, I'd guess even if the rear glass only had 1 slat at the top, slow motoring should be enough to encourage the heat to rise and be pulled out rearwards.

Or even take the blow of cold air from the RH engine fan directly onto the hot plenum might help matters?

Running no cover at present ,next test is with the cover back on as there might be some merit in the ducting :lol: It picks air up from the spoiler grill and if the intercooler is working ,it might be that air IS getting in .
Could it be that Renault got it right and I'm wrong :cry: :lol: :lol:

Nope .Renault are wrong or rather doing the best they can as they have to have the cover in place so the ducting was to try and solve the heat trap problem.
It heats up twice as fast with the cover in place at speed and is chronic at rest .
