Suspension kits

Postby peterg » Mon Apr 19, 2004 3:33 pm

Having just bought my GTA, I am about to start 'doing' things to it, and as I intend to do a bit of hillclimbing and sprinting in it was looking to stiffen up the suspension. Do any manufacturers do a complete lowering kit with adjustable shocks? I thought spax did, but they only list rear shocks, Koni list shocks, but they arent adjustable on the car. Any ideas...and rough prices?

Hi Peter,
Koni does do a adjustable unit but only height adjust over slots obtainable from Simon Autos Order-Nr. 241024,
Koni-Sport-kit (adjustable). You will find increased tire wear with the lowering kit as the camber canot be adjusted to compensate for the drop (as far as i'm aware). Are you going to barbon hillclimb by any chance this year sat 15th may?

Simon Autos currently offers an 'unofficial' Spax coilover kit with Eibach springs. I am currently developing a kit with Spax UK (ride height & damping adjustable with coil over springs). The rear shocks are listed by Spax but infact were never produced. They haven't got past the technical drawing stage yet. I have just offered to assist David Gentleman in developing an alternative (similar) kit from GAZ. I'm sure he will also post to that effect.

Mav.....yes I will be at Barbon, but on the June 19th date(the Sat of that weekend anyway).....its not the national, but still a well supported event. Its a round of my motor clubs championship.....Wigton BOC Northern speed championship (amongst others) and the best event I go to.

You can buy normal, adjustable damping Konis and a set of springs...they come in two heights -25 and -40. Im in the process with Steven of getting sorted a custom set of coilovers, with damping and height adjustment, availble using 21/4 inch dia springs of any poundage of your choice, or using existing spring platforms which allow you to use original springs, but still with height adjusment, to give the same original ride. Lowering them to around -40mm does cause a degree of camber at the back, but it does improve turn in and tyre noise.

I have just fitted Simon Autos spax kit and very nice it was too.... Amazingly the ride is less abrupt and harsh as the standard decarbons can be, so far very impressed although I haven't driven it a great deal.

okay... shhhh £780, very quick delivery. That includsed the shocks springs, taxes and delivery

dont tell my wife!

It is fully adjustable, platforms and shock rate I think mine is about 30mm lower. The spax are easier to adjust than the koni, they have little screw things on the side, wheras I think with the koni you have to turn the strut or something like that.

I have just put Koni's all round on my GTA turbo. The suspention kit came from Prima in Nottingham and cost around £400.00. The lowering springs are an additional £95.00. The shocks can be adjusted. This is done fairly simply by turning the top of the strut with an allen key, they have 3 different settings.

Other than fitting the Konis did you have to do any 'fiddling'?? I know that on some Koni kits you have to dismantle and re use some of the standard parts.
