Wow there is a R20 in that lineup.
They suffered from horrific rust, so suprised to see one still alive.

I like the irony of this quote in the article - he says. "I appreciate well-made cars "..........................

Not sure he has an Alpine :) unless a few were made in Germany

OH COME ON!! I don't think they are that badly put together, I think they have lasted pretty well considering how cheap they are and also don't get looked after properly most of the time. German cars are not all that!! Ask them about their fantastic DSG system, gret when it works, not so great when it does not, as nobody can fix it.

I am an expert in cars that are not well made. I learnt to drive in a Marina, and have recently owned a TVR, a Ginetta and now an Alpine. I have also recently owned Audi, Subaru, BMW, Volvo, Skoda.

Without doubt the last 4 are better made than the plastic ones :) Even the road tests in the 80's didn't pretend that the Alpines were well made.

I can also state that a 25 year old BMW takes the age better than a 25 year old Alpine.

Despite all that I still love my Alp

(1 German Car, 1 French Car, 1 British Car, 1 Japanese Car, 1 Czech Car)

BTW chaps - I was being tongue in cheek. in my original comment.

I dont think the GTA's are that bad at all.
Sure, the main thing that let them down (and many other Renaults of that era) are the electrical connections. Very cheap and poor connectors. Once you overhaul the entire electrical system as i did in my GTA, you have a very reliable car.
I like the fact that Renault built a Supercar (at that time), using just parts from their parts bin. R25, Fuego, Traffic, and Espace. Thus it used parts that were already proven in main stream vehicles.

 Yes Lee you are right. This is what the motortrade does to you.

Going back to German cars, I recall when Mercedes Benz denied all knowledge that their cars made from 97 to 2001 were rot boxes, also BMW 3 series from 1999 to 2002 with the large engine size the rear axle ripped off the bodywork and BMW denied all knowledge, and I have a lot more info if you like......

The japanese's at least in general if there is a common fault even years down the line, they will rectify the problem for free or extend the warranty on that particular part, which can cause a problem. Ask Tony Smith about his Jazz and what Honda did for absolute free of charge, even though the car was many years old and never serviced at a Honda dealer.
