Hardly ever see one, and there it is going nowhere. Sunday afternoon.

Sounds like Jonc. He was at the Renault Sport meet at Gaydon. Hope it was nothing serious Jon?

Edit: Just seen your post in the General section. Hopefully, you've identified the problem and a new TDC sorts it. Good luck!

Yep. That was me.

Current thinking is that the TDC Sensor has gone. After it cooled off for 20 minutes engine fired up again, only to lose all sparks etc. 5 minutes later.

Revs dropped to 0 suddenly at 70-something MPH in lane 3. :shock:

So, tow-bar to J10 services (that's an experience I wouldn't recommend) and then low-loader back home. :(

Ahh that's just reminded me ...check the wiring from the TDC sensor first .I had a car here that would cut ,not want to start then fire up some time later then die ...It was the bodged sensor wiring .It had bare wires that would touch occasionally killing the car then ' move ' away from each other and fire up again no bother .
Many a feck and WTF before I found it :roll:

Also known to occur thanks to a dying coil (just the top bit. not the whole box)

Thanks for the tip about the coil.
I'm pretty sure the computer knows what the problem is as the electronic incident light came on both times and so it will have stored the fault codes.

The RPM went straight to 0 as the light came on which suggests to me that the TDC sensor has stopped sending readings. It's connected directly to the ECU rather than through the coil pack. I'm thinking that if it was the coil, I wouldn't get the spark (as I'm not) but I would still read some engine RPM as it was still turning with it in gear at 70-something.

What experience has anyone had with diagnostic tools? I had a quick look yesterday and you can get a 12-pin (old Renault) plug to OBDII connector and then connectors that turn the OBDII into a USB, which you then plug into your laptop running the appropriate software. Someone's made some that simulates the XR25.

Just thinking that given this is sort of an intermittent fault best to make use of the diagnostics that the computer would give.
