Rocker cover gaskets (for Atmo)

Postby Dave Williams » Fri Feb 07, 2020 8:25 am

Any recommendations for rocker cover gaskets..?

I know gasket quality varies...need all the help I can get to seal up my lhs cover...hence the ask for the 'best'

It's been replaced several times before...I think the tin lids are not super straight which doesn't help.

Secondary ask is if someone has 'cast' covers that I could buy. It's a shame as my tinwork is all nicely painted..but oil onto hot manifolds does not always end well :)

Thanks

They are not easy to seal you should have a metal plate on each one that spreads the load, I got longer bolts and then got a fatter washer on top of the plate, plus gas get sealer and it works, don’t do the bolts up to tight as that will deform the cover between each bolt it’s an art.

Thanks Stuart... indeed you are right ...an art / luck.
The gas sealant is a good tip.

I have the spreaders..will check the bolts...and washers

If that fails I will need to get new (cast) covers.

I have cork gaskets for the original covers and some rubber ones...I bought a batch from an on line seller as they are getting hard to find.PM me if you decide to go this way rather than the cast covers and we can sort something out. I have many lifetimes supply.
I had thought about cast covers, but was concerned about mounting the heat shields and other ancillaries. Let me know if there is a way around that and I might do the same. 310 have cast covers don't they?

Yes, the covers on the A310V6 are cast. They look good as well.

I have high quality victor reinz rubber gaskets in stock for the atmo.

If these don’t work then cast covers is the best solution although you will need to modify the mounting points for the heat shields. There are loads of slightly different variations depending on the donor engine.

Thanks Steve (and Lee) , I did buy one (elring? I think).. hopefully the correct side !..but good to know you (both) have a stock.
I'll try nipping up before replacing..the current gasket can only be 3 years old.
Now I have a replacement if I make it worse I can see if a replacement works. I do have some sealant if all else fails.

Definitely add some sealant whichever option you use and as stated above the spreaders are important. Preferably bin it all and go Ali. Less fire risk
