fire in insruement pod A610

Postby jagcat12 » Tue Aug 29, 2017 10:32 am

Help again please

driving along happily bright sunshine went into a tunnel of trees and turned headlights on.Three things hazard lights started flashing headlights popped up and then smoke started pouring out of drivers side vent on pod .Stopped turned engine off smoke stopped
but hazard lights kept flashing and cannot turn them off.So before I start ripping things apart any one else had this happen ?
Would it be best to get another pod? or any other help please.

When I got home used cut off switch and when on again hazards had stopped flashing and indicators worked as normal ,switched head lights on and hazards came on and smoke and burning smell again,So it would seem some how the head light s being turned on is the trigger

Thanks in advance Dave g

It could be a with that has been rubbing and worn and now shorting when switched on.
Or maybe got "pinched" when last lot of work was done.
For me, sounds like dash/binnacle needs to be removed for investigation, identification of cause and then repair.

Agreed on that! I'm sorry to hear of this - it was nice to meet you at the Deal Car Show in May - sorry I haven't been in touch. It's been a very busy time.

I have experience removing the dash/pod. It's a bit fiddly but reasonably straightforward. Remove steering wheel - you need bolts with the right thread to act as a puller to push the wheel off the splines. I have some that work a treat if you can't find any. And I'm local to you...

Panel off the bottom of the steering wheel, and then some other stuff which I'll post later on if I get the time.

It could be the wireing but underneath the steering wheel there is the old immobiliser which on my car was coursing problems, as I think it has a battery in it which packs up and could cause a short, my sparks removed it in no time. It is a black round tube about 250mm long, worth checking before spending hrs on the loom.

Awesome! Good news Dave!

My A610 is still off the road. Rear brake caliper issues and I took the heater box out. Involved removing the fuel tank!
