Ok so I've fixed the blowers, reverse, broken key and changed some more bulbs but I still have a massive problem with the indicators / hazards. Which was never a problem until I took the dash off.

When the ignition is off the hazards work fine (no indicators but I presume this is correct). But when the ignition is on, even at the 1st step before the fuel pump kicks in, the hazards and the indicators will make one flash only and won't repeat.

Any ideas welcome before I call in the auto elec! I am assuming the relay is fine now as it looks ok inside and out and works the hazard warning lights no problem with the ignition off.

You should draw out the circuit ...From the wiring book and the repair manual . My gut feel is the flasher unit..I had similar issues...(but the directional flashers worked without engine running)...I would try to find someone local who you could swap a working flasher unit with. I seem to recall your unit did not have the OE wiring (alarm? ..With spade connectors)....At least if you have a known working flasher you can determine your wiring/stalk is good.

Weird... I've never heard of that, but I would start by checking the voltages at the flasher relay, both with the ignition off and then with it on. See if anything is different about it...

The indicators will only flash with the ignition in accessory position or fully on.

Maybe something is wrong with the power feed to the flasher when the ignition is on?

Refer to the wiring diagram for the pin-outs. Also check that you've got a good earth at the flasher relay.

Just looking carefully at the circuit board - I don't much like the solder joints top right of the photo but that could be the photo and they might be all right. Check them carefully!

Just looking through another thread and found this diagram, can anyone tell me what pin 7 should do in relation to my issue its description is '+ before ignition'
Could it be linked? What I will do is test it before and after the ignition is turned on

Translation... it means an unswitched +12V feed from the battery ie pre ignition switch perm12V. without it, your flashers wouldn't work with the key out of the ignition.

Normally the -VE side of the battery at attached to the chassis.

Hi Tom, have you made any progress resolving this?
The implication of your first post is that everything else is working normally - I.e. engine starts and runs? Either way you have almost certainly disturbed a connection somewhere (probably in the dash) when you dismantled it. Either you have a poor connection or a short circuit (! - don't want that in a plastic car!). My experience is indicators can get lazy (flashing stops on one side or the other) but hazards nearly always work fine. Cleaning the relay contacts and bending the spring normally fixes it. Are you sure when you put the dash back together all the connectors reconnected correctly - any dirty / lose terminals? Check all earth leads, lastly, check how much the battery voltage drops when you switch on the ignition?

Hi John,

I have not had time to do any more really, possibly this weekend. But I have spent some time on it now and feel pretty confident with what I should see happening. i think the relay is damaged as I can get the hazards working using a known earth to switch them but not the individual indicators. The most concerning thing is the switch live coming down the hazard switch and the indicator telltales (I think, its back on this thread!). I pulled all the connections on the dash etc but not the indicator stalk which I'm guessing would have a switch live......... that's the next thing to try.

Fixed it....... :up

It turns out I created the problem in the 1st place. Once I checked all the wires were in the right place as the original connector block had been changed for spade connections when an after market alarm was fitted, I found the problem was a switched live from the hazard warning light tell tale.

When I last took the dash apart to re coat it I managed to get the hazards tell tale working by soldering across a pc board track that I thought was broken, it made the tell tail light work but clearly messed with the indicators relay although the hazerds worked perfectly. I've now sucked off the solder and all is well just the tell tail back to not working for the hazards, I guess the track on the rear of the board has got issues.

Interestingly I think the yellow directional tell tail 5 is also switch live as I could get the hazards working by using a known earth on the switch pin but this method only worked for the directional indicators when the yellow tell tail wire was connected


All working now though MOT here I come, just a set of rear tyres, front bearings, track rod ends and rack boots all here or on the way :D

The Flasher unit does not have a dedicated Earth ...... The only Earth it gets is from the direction switch (x2) or the Hazard switch.

I found the unit requires an ingniton switch live from the indicator tell tales (yellow wire 5) in order for the directional indicators to work, which i don't think is clear from the manual
