Speedo not working

Postby paulg » Mon May 24, 2004 11:34 am

Having just joined the forum I see that a speedos are a bit of a problem on GTAs.
Mine has suffered similar symptoms to others posted, ie. working intermittently and now not at all. Unfortuantely I need at least the trip computer to be working for my limited mileage classic car insurance.
Apparently its a common problem with the "speedo head unit" but the only solution appears to be a replacement which is about £700+ :( as the whole binnacle is needed.
Are there any other more palatable options such as repair and/or 2nd hand units - I'm even contemplating getting a 3rd aprty speedo such as a "Stack" unit and setting that up to work.
Any advice would be much appreciated...

Paul, My car has had the same problem for the previous owner. I see from the receipts I have that firstly a sensor was replaced then he paid £354 at crawley down for a new instument panel, and the speedo works fine for me, so far...... i'll post you the part no from the invoice if you want, when I get home. Simon.

Is your car an atmo or a turbo?

Paul at ARR has a brand new turbo speedo cluster in stock & I have a second hand atmo cluster.

It could be any one of a number of problems though. Loose connections, faulty sender on gearbox etc etc

Thanks, but have had sender and all connections etc tested and they all seem ok. Unfortunately its a Turbo and it was ARR that quoted me the £700 (i.e 600 + VAT) + fitting which i just cant afford..
£350 seems better but still a bit steep !

I'm having similar problems with the speedo on my Turbo. Can anyone tell me where the sender is located on the gearbox, so I can check it and where any other relevent connections are I can check. Thanks.

you should find the speedo sensor on the o/s of the gearbox, near the drive shaft area.
