"Service" light flashed on ???

Postby simontaylor » Sat May 15, 2004 7:07 pm

When cornering on a roundabout, twice yesterday, the SERVICE light flashed on for about 3 secs, but none of the other warning lights came on.

Any ideas what could cause this?

I dont think its low fuel, as there were 8 gals left and the low fuel light worked at the end of the last tank, I'll be running it low again to double check this.

Not the low screen washer light, as I have tested that by running it dry and the warning light came on with the service light. Now it is fully topped up.

Not the brakes, new pads all round about 2,000 miles ago, also checked them for wear and all are "meaty". The warning light works as it comes on with the hand-brake.

Not the doors open, as they were shut and the warning light does work and come on when you open the doors.

I've looked in the manual, page C-18 and can't see what else it could be.

Any one any ideas what could be causing this ???
Does this happen to ony one else ???

PS: took it for an MOT this am, passed with flying colours, just 1 recomendation to get looked at: "hint of petrol can be smelt in the cabin, but no sign of any leaks".

Joking aside, it could be a faulty or sticky pin switch on the doors, boot or bonnet causing it maybe?

My money would be on the screen wash as my service light (in conjunction with the warning panel) flashes on hard cornering even when fairly full.

In theory though another light on the right hand warning panel should nearly always illuminate in conjuction with the service light to identify the problem. Have you checked all the bulbs?

Regarding the petrol smell, nearly all my early GTA's have had a petrol smell in the cabin at some time, and it hasn't been anything to worry about.

Thanks Stephen,

I would like to disable this "warning", just to make sure. WHERE am I best suited to make a perminant "open" in the circuit, which I could close later? (without cutting any wires) At the washer bottle switch or in the dash, or even inbetween some where. Is it easy to get to the washer bottle switch? Or can I just remove 1 connection in the dash connection blocks?

Thanks also for the coment on petrol smells.

Simon

You should be able to reach a multiplug behind the rh headlamp access panel. Unplug & that should do the trick.

Thanks Stephen,

I have removed the orange wire from this plug as it is shared with the washer motor pump. I know it is the right one because I've tested it against the black earth wire and the low level warnng lamp come on. I've also half drained the washer bottle, so will see what happens on my next run.
