speedo re-calibration?

Postby simonsays74 » Wed Jun 01, 2005 5:35 pm

has anybody had their speedo re-calibrated after fitting different wheels?

if so, who carryied out the work? was it expensive? and did they need the car or just the speedo head with the rear wheel and tyre sizes?

thanks.

Have you worked out if it's really necessary.
Use this and work out the % increase of the circumference, and that's the difference to you actual speed (I think).

If it's only 5 to 10% you may find it's actually made the speedo more accurate 8)

HAVING CHECKED MY A610 SPEEDO AGAINST A 100% ACCURATE GPS BASED NEW ROAD ANGEL I FIND IT IS AT LEAST 10% OUT AS A STARTING POINT AND THAT IS WITH STANDARD WHEELS. I NEVER RELY ON ANY FACTORY SPEEDO IN MY CARS BUT ALWAYS USE A ROAD ANGEL OR ROAD PILOT WITH THE ADDED BENEFIT OF GETTING CAMERA AND BLACKSPOT WARNINGS. I DONT THINK THE RENAULT SPEEDO IS CAPABLE OF EXTREME ACCURACY AND AS YOU CAN BE DONE FOR 32 IN A 30 LIMIT THESE DAYS IT IS NOT WORTH THE RISK. SAVE THE RECAL COST AND BUY A ROAD ANGEL / ROAD PILOT / ORIGIN B2 OR WHATEVER YOU LIKE THE LOOK OF. 8)

IF YOU DO STILL DECIDE TO RECAL THEN I USE SPEEDY CABLES NEAR SWANSEA FOR MY CLASSIC CARS. THEY ARE ON 01992 581600. ANDY BARACLOUGH OR TRACEY. DONT KNOW IF THEY DO ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT. HOPE THAT HELPS. GEOFF :)

There is an ajustable potentiometer inside the speedo. So you need to check the car against a GPS etc and find that 70 equals 80 say, then the speedo would need to be removed and a square wave pulse inputted, at a frequency to arrive at the figure of 70, then adjust the pot make the speedo read 80. Any instrument repair shop should have this equipment.

I did this myself in the electrics room at my workplace.
