Long Brake Pedal

Hi guys not been on here for a while so hello!

Woke my GTA from its winter sleep today and took it for a run and had a very long brake pedal. Got shorter and firmer when the brake pedal was pumped. Brakes still worked but only when virtually at the floor if not pumped. Fluid is fairly new as had to replace my clutch slave a master cylinder a year or so back and bled the brakes then? Assume it could be the brake master cylinder? Fluid is still near max mark in resevior? Wa up to the max so may have lost a small amount of fluid

Also assume this sort of issue would be fluid based and not servo?

Any advise would be welcome

Convinced its the seals in the brake master cylinder now and going to remove it and get it rebuilt. I removed and rebuilt my clutch master cylinder last year and assume brake master cylinder sits on the back of the servo roughly in the same area? I have seen posts saying easier to remove brake master cylinder from the top by removing the fuel tank but the Renault workshop manual seem to say so it from underneath?

Anybody here done it from through wheel arch /underneath and is it easy /possible? I would prefer to not remove the fuel tank if possible

Take the tank out and save yourself a load of grief .Tank will come out easily ,biggest pain is draining it .

luggage tray out ,top breather pipe off .
Loosen undertray/bumper at leading edge to gain access to the two m8 nuts holding the tank straps down .Feed and return off tank bottom and out she comes .
Drain first of course .I have a lifter pump piped to poke through the filler neck but you'll have to drain via the feed return .

Thanks. Bloody typical I have 9 gallons of fuel on board at the moment ( if the gauge is reading correct ! )

OR...jack up car, one of the brake pipes can be removed the other two cut with hack saw blade, remove fluid feed pipes, unbolt master and remove. clean the old master and there are ref numbers on it, take it to a trade motor factors and they should be able to find a replacement, i did this and got a new one for £40.00 measure the old pipes and get new ones made up, fit the new pipes to the master first and feed through the subframe and mount onto the servo, connect the other pipe and feed pipes, bleed system, done.

Just a tip Brad if you're going in from the top.

Run some masking tape down inner the edges of the two front wings to protect them. (Preferrably the wider stuff and a couple of strips on each side).

When you take the luggage tray out it's fairly hefty and the underside can have some sharp edges on it. Even with two people it's easy to catch the wings and leave a scratch, so this way they have something to cover them and you can just peel off later (once you've put it all back in!)

Thanks very much for all the replies.

I used these guys to rebuild my clutch slave last year and found them very reasonable and quick. Will send my brake master their and would recommend them

I am going to jack it up tonight and tale a look. Would rather do it by jacking it up than removing the tank (although I can see that removing the tank would give a lot better access).


Are the pipes that unacessable that you have to cut them? Replaced my clutch master last year by jacking it up, is the brake master harder to get to that this?

Been out tonight and jacked the car up. I see what you mean Lee I could not find a way of removing it from below easily !! Looks like I'll be draining the tank and doing it from above as I can see the tank just above it . :0( my mates a mechanic and I'll ask him if he can drain tank down for me. A least I've had the bumper off before so that should not be a pain when getting to the retaining straps !

You don't need the bumper off .Just the undertray section of it where it joins the actual undertray . Just two bolts and then flex it out of the way .The two nuts are a bit hidden up behind the green brake lines that run across .

Thanks Lee. So the section that its connected to the bumper that bolts to the chassis underneath? Also are there any sender units or anything that need unplugging from the tank?

Yes the big flappy bit .
Just the level sensor plug up top ,breather pipe top and then the feed and return down below .
