Megane - Good or Bad?

Postby PaulC1959 » Wed Mar 06, 2013 3:20 pm

Thinking of chopping in the daily runner Alfa 156, it is just too expensive to run. I have to pay £275 Tax, Insurance around £285, and fuel consumption usually 27 to 30 mpg for mixed driving, i.e. around town with a bit of motorway.

As I am in with the RAOC posse I was considering going for a Megane to match with Jens Clio Dynamique, I think it will probably be a 5 door to cope with visiting olds and the likely arrival of a Golden Retriever, ahhhh. I had checked out Autotrader and found quite a few with reasonable mileage either with a 1.6 16V petrol engine or 1.9 Diesel engine, I am considering the Dynamique model for a bit of faux sport appeal.

Anyway I checked out the owner’s reviews on Autotrader and some were “abandon all hope and avoid like the plague” and others were “Top car will get another and can’t recommend it highly enough”. This left me unsure so on yesterdays bike ride I passed a small dealers premises and decided to pop in, he didn’t have any Meganes other than a Scenic but we had quite a long discussion and he basically said I should avoid the Megane as they are trouble with the electrics and he only has the Scenic because it has such low mileage and he knew the owner. Then he suggested I might be better of looking at a Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra or A Pug, none of which he had to try and push on me.

So I guess this is a rather long winded way of saying what is the collected wisdom on the subject, Megane a pile of rubbish or much maligned?

Paul, I had a Megane 1.6 vvt and it was dreadful. Nothing but trouble.

I would not have another one as a gift. I replaced it with a C4 1.6 vtr+ HDI which has been brilliant.

So Megane is 1 - 0 down early in the first half! Will it make a come back ala Real Madrid?

C4 eh? did have a quick squint, might look more closely now.

Thanks.

it is economy with performance (it is possibly the fastest car I have, for top speed anyway) as well, best of both worlds......however, not for sale, its the only car I have that a) works and b) can be legally driven on the road.

Not had a moment of trouble IIRC and a great drive. No complaints about this particular megane, cannot comment about lesser models.
never thought I would want a list but now find myself needing one just to remind me: Clio V6 230, 5 gt turbo, 5 Gordini turbo, Megane RS 300 Trophy.

I have had my 2005 megane 2L turbo 165 dynamique for about 4 years now and only 2 problems:

1- the windows regulator thingy went. this is a common fault on all meganes and renault actually sorted it out free of charge although the car is well out warranty

2. the other day the boot decided it would not open any longer, havent taken the time to look into it yet...

apart from that it has been very reliable, fuel consumption is ok at about 30mpg around town. it is very practical and spacious for this size car and it is faster up gurston down than my gta  definitely would recommend.

We've got a C4 as a family car - only the 1.4 model, but I have to say it's a really nice car, I genuinely like driving it.

It was a replacement for Susan's old 206, which frankly was a big pile of poo.
I'm just here for the gasoline.

When you told me you had spent a lot of time with the Jewish fraternity when you were growing up I didn't think it had such an effect on you, now I'm not so sure...

You must have kittens every time you fire up that V12 and see the fuel guage going down. Maybe the first Testarossa LPG conversion is in order?

I had that happen quite a lot. The switch gets wet and you get water between the connection. It is easy to take the switch apart and dry/clean it.

Just gently lever it out, then when you take it apart make sure nothing falls out and rolls away. You can short out the connector to get in the boot if you need to in a hurry.

I did write a bit on what to look for but it is now floating around net somewhere.

Any way, my 2009 Meg II ST 1.5Dci 106hp gives 58mpg on the motorway, 46mpg around town & has never failed in any area & only needed routine servicing.
