Race twin exhaust

Postby Juzzblack » Wed Feb 23, 2005 11:07 pm

Recently bought a race twin exhaust off David Gentleman and thought I'd share my opinion for your delectation!

First impressions; it's loud! But that's a good thing! :) At tickover it makes, I think, a nice burbling sound and at full throttle, sounds like a race car! At a cruise, on part throttle, it's not too obtrusive either. It's not for the shy or retiring though! Driving through town it seems to turn everyones head and scares small children! Also, it's not a technical analysis, but I reckon throttle response is improved, turbo lag is reduced and possibly I've even got an extra horse, or two! :D

This is not to curry favour with D.G. but I'm pleased with it! Not sure what the neighbours opinion is yet though!

Anyone else got one?

I'm going to try and video it at the weekend, if I have time, so you can see and hear it in action!

Got one last year and posted the same opinions then....its a worthwhile piece of kit. The main thing I noticed is that it allowed the engine to rev to the red line.

Mine used to quite easily hit the rev limiter anyway! But yes, it does seem to rev more freeely.

When I said it revved to the limiter I meant it was also suitably powerful at the top end of the range and got there more quickly rather than just able to bounce off the limiter.

Not wishing to be a kiljoy but what's the position with the kind gentlemen that carry out the MOTs?
I mean I've been thinking of changing my 'bog standard' for one thats a bit on the loud side but not if everytime the dreaded Test comes round I have to replace it with the standard..

There is no noise test for the MOT as far as I'm aware. On top of that the turbo takes most of the noise away anyway......the twin exhaust mentioned isnt really an exhaust as people know it, its just a collection of pipes welded together and contains no silencers at all.

Yes it was! It was back at the garage on Weds/Thurs. They had to strip it back down and take the timing chain cover off to investigate the suspected cam timing fault. Turns out this was the cause of my poor running woes. The left bank was out by one tooth on the cam sprocket. So while they were doing that I had them fit the exhaust too. Compared to how it was, the transformation was dramatic!

So after originally going in for head gaskets in last November, it's now fixed!

Except, being a GTA, it's come out with a couple more niggly problems. The suspect dodgy temp sensor I've mentioned elsewhere and a small oil leak, possibly from having the timing cover off. So it might have to go back again yet to take it all off for a new timing cover gasket!

As for the MOT, I've got mine tomorrow. I'm hoping they're so sick of my car they'll pass it easily!

Anyway, back to the exhaust. I used it for work today. Never bothered with the stereo and haven't stopped grinning since!

Maybe the testers can give advice about "noise levels" and what could constitute a failure for exhausts.

Juzzblack,

Would appreciate seeing a video, hearing the sound and seeing a picky.

Mine is well rusted and only a matter of time before it fails the MOT hence I'll probably replace with either the Race System Twin or an OEM version.

From the outside of the car it looks exactly like the standard exhaust....twin chrome oval pipes. I tried taking a picture of mine for Simon a while back and failed as its impossible to get the camera inside to take a shot, but I do have external shots if your interested. As for a sound recording.....send me a tape and I'll do it.....but I dont suppose it'll give you any real idea as to how noisy the thing is.
By the way, I asked the MOT man at tghe garage this morning...there is no noise test to the MOT. They only check for leaks in the exhaust.
