Gearbox oil?

What are you using in your GTA turbos for gearbox oil? Lotus recommend TAF-X and although a different gearbox the Ferrari boys use one of the Redline oils and have heard great things saying this has cured second gear change problems. Opinions sought.

I used Castrol EP80, as per the users handbook.
Takes exactly 3 litres.

PS: Get one of those hand oil pumps. I think i got mine for £10 off ebay, and it will be your best friend while changing the gearbox oil on a GTA !.

I use redline products in spider sequential box and wouldn't use anything else top notch stuff

A gunson pressure bleeder is also great for changing or topping up the gearbox oil. Sounds mad but works great.

Many years ago when I had to replace an oil seal deep inside the gearbox, I made up a pipe of 10mm copper, shaped it to suit, attached a funnel to the top, and now I refill the gearbox from the top.....no crawling around underneath for me....except to put the bung back. The other advantage is it goes in smoothly without causing air bubbles which can give you a false full level...until they burst :lol: :lol: :lol:

ELF Tranself TRX 75-80W is what I always use and is the one Renault recommend for the UN1.

lightweight shockproof, blues stuff....

At the risk of being slated as being pickey..... Andy, would you prepared to change the word "should" with "will" :wink:

Transaxle Oil

Have had recent experiance with this issue Replace original oil brand not known car ex Japan With Castol Syntrax 75W-90 Syncro on second was found to be weak .Changed to Elf TRX 75W-80 Syncro is back from the dead much to my relief :roll:

I have been using the Redline lightweight shockproof in my GTA turbo for 3 years and found it did indeed make the synchro work better on second gear on fast changes. No problems with this oil in any of my cars or bikes.(with a dry clutch)

Hi John, ok i'll stick my neck out.....

it will be ok for a UN 1,
the sequential box we use is under extreme heat and pressure and we never have problems it's well worth the expense comes in 1 quart bottles,

if enough club members decide they want a group buy i can get it cheap, (12 people at 4 bottles each minimum order)

we tried ages ago anf no one wanted to know a pity realy as its really good stuff

Guys...something is nagging me about this, so I Googled the oil discription of what is being suggested and found this

"REDLINES unique ShockProof™ Gear Oils are recommended for heavily loaded racing differentials and gearboxes which see shockloading.

ShockProof™ contains a unique solid dispersion which cusions gear teeth to help prevent tooth breakage and allows the use of lower viscosities to give less drag and better shifting. Available as SuperLight, LightWeight and Heavy.

LightWeight is a unique gear oil designed to lubricate racing transmissions and transaxles which see serious loads (not recommended for most syncro-type transmissions). It has excellent low-temperature flow which allows easier shifting when cold. May be used to obtain maximum power transfer in racing differentials which do not see high temperatures."


It is the bit about syncro-type transmissions that concerns me. I have come across this syncro prob before on newer type oils in older designed syncro- transmissions.
It may be OK on sequential boxes as in Andys case, but in my view further information should be sought in the case of a 20+ year old designed box.
.......just an old mans thoughts :lol: :lol: :lol: ... but as usual I could be completely wrong :wink:

Only use 80w ...been said many times ,' tis best for the syncros

Trevor, if you really want to use the Redline product, after a bit more research I found this "REDLINE lightweight Synthetic Gear Oil 75W-80" (bottom image of options), but note it is not the shockproof type, also you will see at the top, this is recommended for the GTA V6 Turbo (1986 - 1992).
Also you will see that it is the same grade as the Renault Tranself oil as recommended for the GTA, which is what Martin and I use.
