Driveshafts clunking on take up of drive

Postby simonsays74 » Thu Feb 03, 2005 12:15 pm

i have this problem with the turbo, though it was the box as i am pretty hard on it at times

with the rear jacked up i have nearly half a turn of free play (at the wheel), that i thought was diff bearings collapsing. i know that the shafts are sold complete, but is there a common side/joint that gives up. :?

the clunk happens when the car is stationary, press the clutch, put it into 1st and then clunk  I also fitted a new clutch thinking that it was clutch drag at first, but still the same noise.

......and yes, they are the faces that i make!!

It might be the gearbox mount. Had to have mine replaced when the box started clunking terribly when the old one perished. Should be pretty obvious if it's this. I could hear and feel the gearbox clunking back and too under the transmission tunnel between the rear seats.

no, it's not the mounts, i have already checked them. as you know when they have gone the gearbox feels like it's coming in beside you for a wee chat!

i'm not sure if i am alone, but i did manage to break all 3 mounting in the atmo car doing a 1/4 mile race against a V6 turbo 4X4 sierra.......

........it sort of went like this, 5000 rpm at the start line, green light, full throttle, side step the clutch and bang

that was fun driving 30 miles back home with nothing holding the engine and gearbox in.

oh, and i lost the race

I have the same problem on my car, a clunk everytime you take up drive. Get underneath the car and grab the driveshaft at the middle, and give it a good hard wiggle, there should be no noise or movement, if there is, fix it!
