Radiator fan relay

Finally got a chance to get my new Samco auxiliary coolant hoses on the car and change the radiator temperature switch/sensor while I had all the wet stuff out.

As usual with these cars, something else became apparent during the job.
Seems the radiator fan had got stuck and blown the fuse so it wasn't coming on. However, I've checked the new sensor and it's working but the fan still isn't coming on after freeing it up and replacing the fuse.

Where is the relay for the radiator fan - I want to check all the easier-to-get-to stuff before getting the bumper off...

Also, what's the best way to get to the heater matrix?

I have just been through this myself. with my car it was actually all the wires next to the fan that were shot!. the relays are by the fuses are behind the black cover which is held in place with three screws. From what I remember they should be the middle two at the bottom row. No need to remove bumper as you should be able to get to the wires via the n/s/f wheel arch.

I had a good look at the radiator fan again last night.
With the ignition on but engine not running, when I short the temperature sensor connections, I can hear a relay going but the fan still isn't running.
I've freed the fan up and it turns OK by hand but not under power. I'm assuming that shorting this should have started the fan?

I took a look at the wiring from the wheel arch as suggested by Phildini but all looks OK - no obvious sign of burnt out wiring etc.

Is there anything else I should be checking before I get the bumper off and replace the fan? I guessing that as the fan had jammed (causing the fuse to blow) it's the most likely failed part in the chain.

Yep, I was thinking about that. Space seems a bit tight to get in there to disconnect the connector which is about half-way along behind the radiator.
Worth a go, though, you're right.

Seems like you are having the same problem I had, It was the fuse by the fans that was corroded and the wiring was coming apart inside.

Thanks Phildini. It still seems quite tricky to get in there without getting the bumper off but I will have another. I think I'll tackle it the opposite way round to Clee's suggestion. Make sure that there is 12V getting to the lead that the fan plugs into.

Mind you, I've got my eye on a nice fan upgrade... :D

Just to draw a line under this one.
It was the fan that was burnt out. I decided to get a new one from Merlin Motorsport - as it was less than half the price of a new Renault from Simon Auto and seemed to have good performance. We'll see.

It was a bumper-off job even to get to the connectors to test the wiring. Fortunately, I managed to change the fan over without taking the radiator out, which was a bonus.

I applied power directly to the old fan once it was out and couldn't get anything out of it at all. If anyone wants any of the bits of it as spares - like the fan blades or the mounting bracket, let me know.
