Turbo Removal/refit- help needed

Postby jon_viola » Sat Jun 27, 2009 2:05 pm

Dear All,

As you know my turbo is buggered and as i've started this new quartet job i have less than no cash and even less time. I would however like to get my car back on the road and have saved up enough to send up the turbo to the turbo dude Lee has reccomended.

I was wondering if anyone could help me to remove my trubo. I have little mechanical skill but lots of enthusiasm. My lock up has no power and few tools. However, the turbo was removed and replaced by DG a couple of years ago (it's his stage II) so it should come off reasonably easily- it's water cooling system is connected. I could in return offer a bed, lots of wine and some contribution towards costs and time. Perhaps i could in return help you/your kids/your school and come and give some sort of music teaching (i'm teacher at the Royal College of Music) or help gratis......

My car is in SE London 20 mins from junc 3 M25

Many thanks

Jon

When are you thinking of doing it Jon? Are you still on tour? If non-urgent then I could probably help you in about 3 weeks time.

Thanks so much for the offers guys- just wondering are there any tricks to it? Handy hints? What tools will I need to have around?

Cheers

Well, it came off today!!!

Thanks so so so so much to Lee Metters. I literally could not have done it without you!

Anyway thought you might all like to know that the stage 2 unit i bought new from DG turns out to be a refub Nissan unit    not new at all and prob not the Garrett Hybrid T3/4 Turbo with 46 trim T4 compressor wheel and 0.48 a/r Europa Cup exhaust housing!!!!!

The inlet turbine was totally shot with all the blades blunted andsome holes in the compressor wheel. There were so many loose bolts and missing bolts incl the waste gate missing three and as usual some stuck on including one you'd have to be a magician to even get a spanner on....

Don't really know what to do about being sold the wrong turbo etc but will send this one off to cLee's place and see what they think.

What a nightmare!!

I thought the whole point of going to a specialist was that you got good service with the appropriate parts fitted in the correct way. You should have seen the number of loose bolts.

Jon, I dont think it is fair to knock DG directly, my experience of the motor trade is that this sort or 'service' is quite normal.

I had a refurb Nissan unit from DG and it has been fine for 2 years, and yes, you will need to link 2 external take offs togeteher to make it air tight.

Simon,
I don't think the Turbo itself is the only issue (and the difference between new and reconditioned is a fine line anyway) it was the quality of install that surprised me.

The waste gate was actually floating on the turbo as it had only two of the 5 bolts installed, and the remaining two were less than finger tight. There was actually a gap- and this explained the exhaust gas staines around it. We didn't find the bolts in the cooling box either, so I can only conclude they just weren't there.
Elsewhere many other bolts were only finger tight.

For me the biggest question is why the compressor turbine had disintegrated- fortunately the charge cooler (and I guess inter cooler too) had caught most of the big bits otherwise the bill would be much bigger.

Interesting perspective, that all the motor trade are given to applying gloss to what they have done, so that is ok...if I understood correctly.

Perhaps this is enough on this until John hears from the turbo man?

Cheers
Lee

I spoke to DG yesterday, he assured me that supplying a refurb unit was normal as the particular turbo in question was not made any more- whether this is correct or not i have no way of knowing so i guess i will have to take his word- however it would seem to me that this should be made quite clear at the time of purchase and on his website.

Turbo will be sent to Turbo Developments on Monday.

Hybrid turbos are built from donor parts, but things like the compressor housing do not under normal circumstances wear out. Therefore a refurbished unit can be as "good as new" because only those parts that do not wear are recycled. You should have all new internals and seals, and it should all be properly balanced.

The fact that the compressor housing says Nissan on it does not mean that it's a Nissan turbo, only that there's a flavour of Nissan compressor housing that's correct for your hybrid, and was used to build your turbo.

I bought a stage 1 turbo from DG that has a Nissan compressor and it's still working okay after 15000 miles but I did fit it myself (DeLorean project) and it sounds like the fitting job was the problem on yours. I wasn't impressed at the peculiar collection of threads used on the unit - metric, UNF and imperial! Photos of it when hew are here if interested

Ha! The turbo was supplied and fitted by DG, anyway it looks like the main nut holding the turbo came off and was sucked in killing the turbo. It's being done as we speak at Turbo Developments just don't tell the missus the cost :o :o :D :D

So the Turbo's back! All like new and with new actuator as well, now i have seen the new turbines i can see just how buggered the old one was. Apparently the main nut came undone and got sucked back into the unit chewing up and cracking the turbines, nice!

Anyway- i was wondering if anyone was coming past this way who could offer any help with the refit. It should (?) be quicker, i've bought some new stainless bolts and have kept all the old ones so.....

Be soooooo good to get her back on the road :D :D :D :D :D :D
