Headlining fun

Postby Stunned Monkey » Thu Apr 16, 2009 2:29 pm

Well, over the past couple of days, I decided to tackle the biggest annoyance in my car... the completely sagging headliner. Only held up by three of the four edges, it was busy dropping orange dust on everything and tickling everyone's heads.

I still had some material and glue in the loft from the last DeLorean I did, so set about it

The paint scraper and hoover got a lot of use! Polly said it looked as though someone had gone crazy with a multi-pack of Wotsits...

One interesting point to note - I inadvertantly discovered the reason my remote locks had such a terrible range - the receiver was full of orange dust from the headliner. A quick blow on it and I can now trip the locks from 5 feet away. No more fannying around trying to point it at the rear view mirror etc.

The hoovering took ages

FWIW the material is "dove grey" headlining from Woolies Trim, and the glue is 3M "Spray 74" foam adhesive (sticks instantly but can be repositioned).

This headlining is quite expensive, but much better quality than the original stuff (and slightly lighter in colour)

When I did mine I cleaned off all the old foam from the original material, restuck it back onto new 6mm foam, then stuck it back in the car, to keep it as it was. I cleaned off the old foam and glue from the cars roof by filling an empty household kitchen trigger spray bottle with acetone, covered all the inside with old sheets for protection, sat in the back seat, squirted a small patch at a time, and it all cleaned off perfectly. But was I pleased when it was all over ....Hopefully I`ll never have to do it again

Blimey. Spray 74 is fairly potent, but spraying neat acetone must've been "fun" !!! :x     :( :)

Martin did the headlining come with the foam already stuck on it?

Yes and no - it's got 5mm or so of soft backing, yes, but it isn't foam and doesn't disintegrate over time.

I've been using it on DeLoreans for years - highly recommend it.

If you want super soft headliners, you can double up the material, but it's expensive and who ever spends that long examining the roof of a car? :D

Halfway through the same job (another one unfinished  ). I am going to try and save the original headlining, if not I'll get the same one as yours Stunned I think.

Good for you Martin, mine came up all right with a good brush, spray glue some new 6mm foam on it, and it will look like new. :D :D :D
