Engine re-build...the joy!

Postby peterg » Fri Aug 11, 2006 6:44 pm

After my unfortunate engine decided to give up the ghost I am in the early staged of re-building it. The turbo has gone off for a refurb and a bigger compressor housing to flow more air(so I can do it all again after a few more RR sessions  ).
The engine is stripped down to the heads and block now.....it hasnt been too hard so far, I just seem to have a lot of bits in boxes! I hope I can remember where they all go
The heads will be coming off tomorrow so I will know for sure whats wrong, but at the minute its assumed to be piston rings. New rings, big ends, valve stem oil seals and gaskets are on their way (hopefully!!!) from Mecca parts in France. I need it up and running again before the wedding on 1st September.......if I have to take the Pug 205 to my last 2 events I may throw away another championship

If you get stuck, give us a shout. Rebuilt a Z7U in a DeLorean on the TT DeLorean.... not that hard. Blessed with an excellent local dealer who delivers on the van to us

Its only then parts that I'm worried about......both turbo gaskets arent available thru Renualt at the mo. The rest is just a Meccano set....it will be done! I need it built by 1st Sept...and it will be one way or another...not going to loose the championship over technicalities 2 years in a row!!!!!
I have Martin's disease....posting whilst pissed....its hard work getting it right

The heads are off! One bore on the left bank is full of oil.....the ring is shot! Whats odd is that it wasnt the piston with the worst leakage problem.....bizarre!

May be it is not a broken ring?
Are you doing this with the engine in or out of the car?

Have you got clamps attached to liners to prevent them moving?
I'm just here for the gasoline.

I would imagine so.....I'm not doing the ring replacement bit, Ive been working but as its my usual garage then I'm sure they know what theyre doing. I will be going in for a look on Monday to see exactly what the damage is.

Maybe they were like that all along  - you may find if one is 'full' of oil, it has affected the leak down readings...

Leakdown readings

Postby Miles » Sat Aug 12, 2006 10:55 pm

I agree David,
This is a technique for checking which part is worn.
If you put oil in the cylinder after a pressure test, then retest if the readings improve it is bores/rings and not headgasket.
