Engine Cooling Fans Inop

Postby BIG_MVS » Sun Feb 26, 2006 10:56 pm

Not working at all! After seeing Juzz's car today and how much heat they such/blow out of the engine I think it's best I get mine working...

Any ideas? I looked in the technical section but there is only an example of the engine cooling fan workaround, Stephen could I have the full copy please?

First of all, just check the two temp probes in front of the turbo are operational. Pull the connectors off and bridge them together. If nothing happens the problem is elsewhere, if the fans whirr up then the probes are knackered..

and read this thread.

Basically, with a cold car..... short out the sump oil temp sensor wires, it in on the o/s side of the sump, the fans should come on at 6v or half speed.

Short out the turbo sensors, 1 will make them increase to 12 v and full speed, the other will make the dash turbo light come on.

Good Luck.

Cheers for the replies Guys,

We tried bridging the two connectors on the temp sensor and still nothing.

Juzz then pointed out the oil temp sensor to the rhs of the sump was to blame for his fans not working, looking at my car there is just a blanking lug where this should be :?: Mine is slightly later than his car so did renault change the location of the oil temp sensor??

The turbo sensor and oil sensor work independantly.

as I said..... "on a cold car" that is "the oil will NOT be up to temp".

Actually, on a cold car, if you short the turbo sensor, the fans will stay on for 3 minutes at 12 volts full blast, just like when you switch the ignition off, if everything was working.

I think some one mentioned before that these fans are NOT fused, so take care.
There is a connector on the LH side for the LH fan. You could test the fan from a battery, or test the supply with a multimeter while the sensor contacts are shorted.

For sure, it will be a simple wiring failure.

Yes I think it will be wiring as well but I can't find the oil temp sensor??

Where is it on the later model GTA's as there is a blanking lug on the right handside of the sump where it should be located?

Cheers,

Martin

It must be some where around the sump, as must the wires, unless it has been removed.
Mine is 1986 and it is like the parts manual, page 10.501 item 31.
Page 10.701 shows a sensor in the lower part of the block below the oil filter (sort of area) and the same hole could be a blanking plug, however the note specifies this for a Z6W engine (I'm not sure what this would be from). Maybe you have an replacement block in your car?

I had a look at BIG_MVS's sump too yesterdy and there was definately a blanking plug in the position where I have the sensor and wires on mine. Couldn't see one anywhere else on the sump either, so it does seem to be missing! :?

None of the late cars have an oil temp sensor in the sump even though it's shown in the parts book. They just have the blanking plug as described. Not sure why and don't know if it's missing altogether or has just been relocated.

Will have to do some research!

That would explain it then  If you could Steve that would be great.

How do the cooling fans take a reading off oil temps then? Anything else I need to check in the meantime?

I seem to have read somewhere about a resistor behind the radio that controls the fans??

An important point I have posted before is that Renault have transposed the temperature and warning sensor part numbers in the parts book for all GTAs and A610s. As a result of this many cars (including my own when I bought it) have the wrong 110c warning light sensor in the top fan position. Always have a look at the figures on the sensor body. It should say 80/90. The 80 / 90 fan switch is 60 01 011 893 and the 110 is 60 01 008 967

The seals say "do not reuse" as they harden up with heat and would not hold the sensor tightly if removed and refitted from the bracket. I had a similar problem with a Rover Vitesse after a new rad was fitted. The idiot dealer reused the identical "do not reuse" temp seals and one blew out on Salisbury Plain on a hot Sunday evening causing several hours of unwanted fun as in this car all the coolant exited through the sensor hole unlike on the Alpine which measures air not water temperature. :?
Driving an A610 is just so sublime.

I'm still having problems locating the oil temp sensor, where are they located on the A610/later GTA's anyone know?

Right, managed a few spare hours to do some work on the gta at last!

Update - Used the block connector above the left hand side "extractor" fan and the blower fan came on? Do they work independantly or should both have come on at the same time?

Still no further into finding where the oil temp sensor is on my car which works the fans anyone know?
