I've bought new crocodile clips and checked using the light bulb test as you suggested (good bright light) for power at the connector block end of the wires The paired back and twisted wires are a good tight push fit into the block but still no signs of life from the speedo.
If your offer is still open I would like to take it up so could you please PM me your full contact details and I'll organise boxing up/sending the assembly.

John,

I've had issues on & off ever since owning the car. I posted the issues before but I've never got to the bottom of it.

My rev needle sometimes works, other times it just simply stays stationary. Often it will stick at say 1000 rpm or be slow to move - i e the engine is accelarating fast but the needle isnt!

Occurs in cold weather, hot weather. Sometimes when the car has been running for a while, other times when it hasnt been used for a while.

No rhyme or reason.

Thought at first it was fouling on the plastic panel - a gentle prod with my finger proved it wasnt.

Then perhaps it was the bearing on the rear not lubricated enough - so i put a drop of oil on it. But no change.

Finally looked at adjusting the main screw on the back - but that didnt work either.

On the plus side. I can now remove the instrument cluster in less than 5 mins which is a personal best :up

Hi Paul,

As I said, I have not got a method of running the rev counter on the bench unfortunately.
But I remember, we have been here before, and as you said in the previous post that the needle can stick somewhere around the dial and stay there even when you switch of the ign thus causing any voltage to be removed from the circuit. That still indicates to me that it is a mechanical problem.
Without going over it all over again .... just as a reminder, in case you want to have a go again, below here is the link to our previous posts. Having just read it through again, apart from my blowing method to try to get it to stick, I can't think of anything new. Sorry........ but it might be worth reading it through again.
Perversely, it would be easier to fix it if it didn't work at all.
Sorry I can't be any more help.

Well after a little delay because I was away from home, Murf posted his complete speedo unit over to me which I received today, and after a few checks I found that the speedo motor and odometer were working OK, so I plugged in my known good spare speedo board to Murf's unit and it burst into life. So clearly the fault was in his board. A few checks around and I had some incorrect readings around the speedo motor drive transistor which I then replaced, and as if by magic, the speedo started to work. That was a conclusive result, so I set about carrying out all the things set out in "Speedo Fix 1 & 2" posts, and all is now working fine.
Below are a few pics of it all working OK ...... it is not fully reassembled completely as yet, as it did seem to have a bit of a noisy motor, so a bit more dismantling to get to the motor and a bit of lubrication on its bearings, now it is much quieter ..... So after reassembly, and final check ..... back to Murf to reinstall in his Alp. :)

Has he really got a speedo unit with only 8k miles on it, or has it been wound back a little.(lot).?

Oh yes, I miss read the contrasting 9 as the 10ths, but actually it is only 10th on the bottom odometer.

Maybe its because I never look down at the speedo....

Thought I should finally update the saga of my speedo which has a 'happy ending'. The whole unit was boxed up and sent to John C in Jersey who miraculously discovered the fault and even more astonishingly rectified the problem. What a star!!!
John returned the repaired unit to me and on Easter Saturday I plucked up courage to attempt the refit into the binnacle. Most of the day was spent wrestling with the wiring to persuade it back into it's original configuration so that I could re-clip and secure the front face of the housing. It was a nightmare job as everything is old and brittle and someone had previously broken three of the four bottom self-tapper tabs.
However after a lot of hassle and bad language I eventually got the front panel into position/clipped on and was then able to reconnect the battery to test that I had put all the connectors together correctly. Massive relief when all the warning lights and gauges did what they are supposed to do with the engine running. I then took the car out for an illegal go round the block (mot had expired in mid March) to see if John's magic was still working and 'hey presto' I have a beautifully smooth working speedometer complete with odo/trip to match, what luxury.
Last week the car was mot tested and passed with a couple of advisories namely a slightly corroded osf brake pipe and cracked osf headlamp lense so I'm well pleased.
I decided on Sunday to go to the Bicester Scramble and blow out the winter cobwebs. She ran faultlessly, clocking up just over 200 miles without any flickering lights which is a first. Maybe taking apart, cleaning and re-assembling all the connectors has done the trick with that issue.
Just for now then a very happy bunny.
