Im not talking about latent heat, SHC is how much energy is required to raise the temperature of the substance by 1 degree, not a change of state..

Water has the highest, bar Ammonia (which we can't use as it rots aluminium) and liquid hydrogen.

The water contained within the vessel needs to move to have any effect .Evaporation would be the only way to move heat if not. It works exactly the same as the main engine cooling .moving water to rad etc.
The water is transferring the heat to :?: :?: :?: the container :!: unless the water is moving it aint doing shi##

With your example of engine cooling....do you accept that water in the system will keep the engine cool enough to run for considerably longer than no water? Yes......point proven!

Yes, exactly. If I burn my finger, does it only get cool if I stick it under running water and not just in a bucket of still water??

Not the same thing at all ,that's a silly analogy ..If the water isn't moving it isn't transferring heat in any way close to the volumes PG is stating .

Youve lost me, water doesnt have to be moving to absorb heat..

All SHC of all substances are done on a static substance, its not the SHC of moving air, or moving water, its a certain mass of the substance against the amount of energy required to raise it by 1 degree.

Metals, woods, solids have a SHC value, and they are not a 'moving' substance..

You think the water may 'heat up' by the temperature of the boost, but think about how much energy is required to boil a kettle, AND how long its takes to do so...

Has the light bulb above your head gone on yet Lee????
If you think about jumping into a pool of water at ambient temperature it is going to feel cool and will cool your body down in the process wether its moving or not.

Another analogy

Postby Tony Smith » Mon Apr 03, 2006 9:24 pm

Imagine a glowing red hot horseshoe just removed from a furnace. How long would you have to wave it about before you could touch it without burning yourself. Alternatively dip it in a bucket of water - even warm water and it would be safe to touch in probably 5 sec.
Alpines - GTA 3.0 Turbo, GTA 3.0 Inj (Project DD), GTA 6.2 V8 (500 bhp) , R32 Skyline GTR, BMW Alpina B10 635 Highline, Alpina B10 E39 5 Series, Jaguar 4.2 XKR, Laguna 205GT, BMW 120d.

What would happen if I put it in a tube that was surrounded by water though :?: It's not the same :!: :!: The contact is transfering heat .

I've got a busy day ahead today ,redesigning all the mould tools using non functioning chargecoolers to keep them cool

But its not in a tube, the 'tube' is a fine matrix of fins, the suface area and thus 'contact' area for transferring heat is massive..

By your theory, even a normal air to air intercooler will do nothing if no air is actually flowing through it, whereas we all know it will have simple radiation to lose heat into the air........now if we contain that intercooler in a substance that has a SHC 4 times that of air, it is obvious why the chargecooler in a static state can absorb large quantities of energy. :)
